Hi Happy Aquasporters,
It's that time again for our trek down south a ways. This gathering will take place on May 5th somewhere in the Pine Island area. The Explorer crowd (hard cores) will be going down on the 4th and staying the night somewhere in that area, having a great time fishing and partaking and preparing for the next day's festivities. Then relaxing after the gathering for another night before heading back home on Sunday. All members are welcome to stay on our boats with us - bring an air mattress and sleeping bag and you're set. We all have full biminis to help keep everything dry. Should have plenty of room on mine and Dave's boat.
Capt Matt, I'm all ears as to where we should hold the gathering - your stomping grounds. If you could give me some landmarks that I can find on google earth then I'll grab some screen shots and get the invite more detailed. I know we talked about it before but adding that info here will help.
Also, are there any reasonable hotels that you can recommend for the people that want to tow down and sleep in a soft bed?
The Explorer crowd will be putting in at Boca Grande and cruise down there - trucks and trailers will be safe in Eldred's.
The gathering usually starts around noonish with fishing before and after always an option.
-
i planned on taking that weekend off and taking the boat down there but got limited vacation time thats already planned out for the year so ill be passing up on this go-around :(
but...... ill be taking the boat on a trip in july though :D
hey, atleast i was able to make it out to one of the mini-gatherings this year!

Rick
If you plan on sleeping on the anchored boats Pelican Bay on Cayo Costa is a great option along with the narrow's on North Captiva. Both are sheltered anchorages and have close proximity to the beach.
The north cap spot is roughly a mile north of redfish pass and has a natural channel just south of Fosters point that runs all the way in to the island making for about a 5o yard walk to the beach.
There is also Picnic Island to the south, its right between Sanibel and St James City although it can be a busy place on the weekends it clears out by sunset.
The Tarpon Lodge in Pineland is about the only hotel on Pine island with good boat access.
Let me know what other info you need?
Capt Matt

Capt. Matt, does Cabbage Key offer accommodations as well as their cheeseburger in paradise? I haven't been there in 4 or 5 years.
-
The "hook" on the end of Punta Blanca Island is where we camped one night at the last gathering - a very nice sheltered cove :thumleft: Stumbled onto it but glad I did.

Seems it's pretty close to where you're talking about Capt Matt. May be a good place to camp and use as a launch point.
Here is a pic of North Captiva
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data//593/North_captiva_large.png)
Is Redfish Pass the pass at the bottom of Captiva?
Is it ok to camp in Foster Bay? Is it ok to be on the beach? Looks to be a nice place to hide unless the wind is from the South.
-
That hook you camped in is all part of pelican bay and is where the old school house used to be. That whole bay is sheltered. The only draw back is its a long walk across to the gulf beach. pelican bay does have a few nice little sandy area's in there though you can use as a beach. At the north entrance to pelican bay there is a nice sandy area.
Redfish pass is at the bottom of the one picture, its between Captiva and north Captiva, roughly a mile or so south of Fosters point. Even on a south wind the narrows is pretty sheltered as there is a huge shallow area to the south that blocks the waves. You are not aloud to camp on the beaches on either N-Cap or Cayo but sleeping on your boats and using the beach is not a issue. Fosters offers a good natural deep channel coming in from the intercoastal and you can slide all the way up to the very NW corner. Its only about 50 yards wide to the beach giving you a good breeze and hopefully insect free sleeping conditions.
Cabbage key does offer rooms in the main building along with rental cottages with there own docks. North Captiva island Club also offers amenities but not sure if they rent by the night or week. The best place to stay would be Jensens Twin palms marina on Captiva, they have cool old cottages and are just good old Florida boys I grew up that own and run it.
My suggestion would be Fosters bay on N-cap.
Capt matt
-
Thanks Capt Matt.
We camp on the boats. The Narrows looks good too.
That bay sounds good to me. Let's plan on having the gathering in Foster's bay.
Are there any markers to alert us that we're coming up on the turn into Foster's Bay?
Did you mention that it fills up fast? If so, we can get there early and grab some spots.
Do we need a plan B for weather?
If some members wanted to trailer down, where would you suggest putting in at? Pineland Marina? I see Tarpon Lodge is about the same place. Any other cottages with ramps on Pine Island?

Rick
On the south side of the channel going into fosters bay there is a PVC pipe, thats about it. If you want me to put a flag or a mark on it I will. The channel is easy to spot and shows on my garmin chart plotter. If you are going in during sunny conditions its easy to spot or just wait for another boat running in there and follow them.
Capt Matt
-
I'm running a Garmin too - so hopefully my maps are not too old - should be fine.
In your opinion, is there a better place to hold the gathering?
Also, back to the question for the people that might tow in - any small mom & pop cottages with ramp that you know of?
-
Here is our route
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data//593/trip_route.png)
On a perfect day anyone can make the route we're taking but add 15 knot winds and a smaller boat may not want to try to cross the pass. Coming across the bay around Cayo Costa is like Tampa bay or worse.
-
Fosters is the place
Pineland is going to be the closest crossing from Pine Island, but I would suggest the Monroe canal marina in St James City. Its where i keep my boat and they charge $10 to launch and park where as pineland is around $20.
Capt Matt
-
Sounds like a plan, can't wait.
-
Time for a bump :salut:
-
I wonder if we can attract any members from the south of sanibel this time? That's why we're holding it where we are....
-
We have Sanibel members?
Should be a close enough run for Bonita and even Naples members too.
Capt Matt
-
Hope so, glockdiver lives down there but he hasn't been on here in months, might be time to make a call, Doc should come so thats a start.
-
It's absolutely beautiful down there. I would love to go, but that's Talladega weekend. The craptacular little VW camper is going to the infield.
-
Hey Matt, is there a place that has public bathrooms that we can access by boat? Would the marinas mind if we pulled up to use the facilities?
Now that I'm back in town let's fire this thing up. Coming up fast - 2 weeks away now
Doc are you coming? Did you figure out a way to make the dodger so you can camp? I have a cot if you want to use that - should fit up front in your boat nicely.
SC170 are you in town that week?
Treefish are going to be in the area that weekend?
Woody - making the trip?
How about any of the members in the upper keys (maybe a bit far)? Or as Matt said - Sanibel, Bonita and Naples?
-
Jensen's twin palm marina on Captiva for bathrooms, If your looking for a shower hit Tween Waters on Captiva. Jensens won't care, tween waters might want to charge you, hit the pool bar and use the showers there. best burger in town, good cocktails, sights etc at the pool bar
Capt Matt
-
Tween Water looks huge. Hmmm, may need to pack my better swim suits
Didn't realize Pine Island Sound was so wide, like 5-6 miles between the main islands. So the sound can whip up a bit too. We're only going to have great weather though, so no problems. Looks like a TON of fishing spots around there (and a bunch of places to run aground). Have to get some hints from you Matt so we can catch lunch :D (I think you gave CH some hints in the other thread)
Is the channel to Jenson's marked from the Sound?
Was also looking at the surrounding areas and we're right in our Ft Myers membership's area too - COME ON OUT!! Glock is in that area - Scott, I think you're right - time to make the call. I think Doc is from Cape Coral, so this is in his back yard too - we can come visit his real boat. Hmmm - Facilities
I can't wait - time to start stocking the dry cooler and making the list for the wet cooler. Scott & Dave, you two have those really killer new "Q"s, we need to make sure we eat well around the gathering time - maybe burgers for all? I can bring a few pounds of pork and hamburger mixed so we have some scrumptious munchies ready. Matt, might not be (or maybe will) as good as the Tween but hey, the price is right.
-
starting to sound like big fun
-
Channel to Jensens is well marked

You have quite an idle zone in and out of there to deal with multiple times a day.

There will always be another "Talladega weekend" - there won't be many Aquasport gatherings in that area unless things take off and someone coordinates them down there. One more after this for a while.
-
Would like to Rick, but looks like I'm stuck in SC for now.
-
Bummer

10 min ride out the canal then another 5 to get out of the crazy big Manatee zone April 1st thru November 15th.
Blame Jimmy Buffet for the Manatee zones, founder of save the manatee club

Damn, looks like PGI...

I don't really see the big deal. Manatee doesn't really taste any different than loggerhead turtle or baby seal pups to me.

Fried up it all tastes like Chicken.

Putting the boat in the shop tomorrow for new bottom paint - been 5 yrs - got my money worth. She'll be all purdy for the gathering
-
Fried up it all tastes like Chicken.
Everything taste like chicken but chicken, go figure
-
The native Caloosa indians hunted manatee's for food, just about wiped them out.
There is a whole family living of Manatee's in the channel going into fosters on N-cap.
Bring a rope and your riding boots for some saltwater rodeo fun after cocktails.

-
Rick I never did hear back from Mike (glockdiver) yet
Side note, Max's came down alittle on no eth, only 4.19 now
-
I just check the station on Fruitville - $4.34. Looks like Max's will be the one.
I should get my boat back Sat morn. Then it's time to buff it out and wax it over the weekend.
-
Then it's time to buff it out and wax it over the weekend.
That's no fun.
-
Couple hours and a couple beers
I was turned on to a really good all-in-one that was made on Anna Maria - really good. Got it at Marine Surplus. They can't get it anymore, like the guy died that made it. It was a staple of the boat mfrs for the shows from what I hear. I still have a pint of it and that's enough to do the boat. The boat still has a little shine and no chalking (after 5 years  ) but will look great when I'm done. I'll probably save a mpg in the truck towing it down to BG :D

Rick, what is this brand you use?
Tx!

It is called Yachtex Detailing Paste.

This time next week
..... we'll be barged up and cooking dinner
Hope we get a few members to stop by - it'll be a blast.
The bottom paint came out great again - same as it looked 5 years ago. Can hardly tell it's painted from afar.
-
The Shady Deal buffed out nicely - only used a 1/4 pint for the whole boat.
CH, what's the fuel price at Max's, any idea?
-
4.19 as of yesterday.
-
What's you guys' ethanol prices? We're down to $3.63...
-
4.19 as of yesterday.
Still high - probably wait until Thursday or Friday to fill it up. Hopefully it'll be down a bit. What time will you be ready to boogy on Friday?
SB - we're in the 3.80s here still or at least the places I drove past.
My wife has been buying groceries at Winn Dixie and building the "cents off" on gas. A week ago I got 20 gallons of gas for $.109 a gallon (can't get it for free - that's the minimum) or $2.18 total. She says I'll get the same price this week also. If you guys aren't taking advantage of this you should look into it. Gotta buy groceries somewhere....
-
I would love make this one - finally. Alas, my firm has its annual meeting that weekend in Clearwater. Have fun guys!
-
What time will you be ready to boogy on Friday?
I'm gonna wait till Josh gets out of school, I should be ready to leave around 3, that put me at the ramp 4-4:30 that should work, and I may just stop on the way and fill up, maybe the price will come down more by then, I need 80 gal so any little bit helps.
-

Make sure to mark your calender for the Nov gathering then :thumright:

I'm pretty sure Dave and I will split around noon. He said he's done some major updates on his boat - I'm going over tomorrow to see what all the hubbub is.
I guess we could meet in the hook at Cayo Costa?
...I may just stop on the way and fill up, maybe the price will come down more by then, I need 80 gal so any little bit helps.
I can feel your pain - I think I need 100 gals. I hope she has 300 or so gals on hand. If you stop in this week warn her.
I bought Walmart out of Startron - so at least I'm ready on that end.
-

You are also invited to attend the Octoberfest Aquasport Reunion, Southport, NC, the weekend of Oct 15th.
It will be our pleasure to show you and your wife a great time here on the Carolina coast :thumright:

4 more days
Should be some great fishing and the forecast looks good so far.

Hope so, you know me, I like to catch dinner :D
-
as many trout as you want to catch right on the edges of the channel going into fosters bay.
My fingers are crossed this wind quits
Capt Matt
-
Thursday Night
East winds around 15 knots. Seas 2 to 4 feet. Bay and inland waters a moderate chop.
Friday
East winds around 15 knots becoming northeast 5 knots in the afternoon. Seas 2 to 3 feet. Bay and inland waters a moderate chop. A slight chance of thunderstorms.
Friday Night
East winds around 10 knots. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Saturday
North winds around 10 knots. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A slight chance of thunderstorms.
Matt, are you seeing an uptick in the trout this year? I have been catching a bunch and don't remember them being this plentiful the last few years.
-
Spring time is always great trout fishing, this year though they do seem a little larger and more plentyfull.
On the higher water you should be able to get some reds on the oyster bars on mangroves at fosters too.
The joy of this spot is you don't have to go far at all to catch fish.
What time you planning on rolling in Friday?
Capt Matt
-
That's Good news on the fishing.
going to be late afternoon for me, hope to be on the water by 5 Friday
-
Looking forward to meeting everyone
Capt Matt
-
I think we're going to camp in the hook at Cayo Costa on Friday. Such a great "hidey hole" from the wind. (Without wind it may be a "bug hole" though) We may continue to cruise down to check out the gathering area and then come back up though. We can reciprocate cell #s via PM Matt.
Dave and I plan on leaving here around noon and that should put us at Boca bridge at about 130-2 (have to stop for fuel - a LOT of fuel - his boat and mine) and then it's a quick 10 miles out to Cayo.
Scott said he'd meet us at Cayo a little later.
-
Rick just a thought, the no seums may eat us i alive in that hook this time of year, Foster bay might be a good place to camp.
-
Wow, we hit enter at virtually same time.
I agree that we have to be flexible on the camp site based on the bugs and we won't know about the skeeters until dusk. The no-see-ums could be anytime.
I think we have to rendevous (sp?) somewhere though - CH68 could be a start - we'll be in range :!:
-
Well since you will be down before me the hook is as good a place any to start.
-
It's about time we had one of these down near me!! 8)
Scott, I got your voicemail, thanks for calling bud! Glad you did, because I've been so wrapped up in other sheet that I've neglected my Aquasport brothers, but I plan on being out there Saturday, especially since its basically in my back yard! Might even camp out Fri night, will see how work goes.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's boats!

Mike, great to hear from you bud, been way to long, i was wondering if you got my message, guess you did :D
Glad your gonna make it, should be fun.

Honestly it couldn't come at a better time. In 2 weeks I'm on vacation and taking the 225 down to Key Largo for a week of diving and spear fishing, and unfortunately I haven't had the boat out in about 6-7 weeks... So I'm due for a tune-up run to make sure everything's working 100% before the big week.
Last time I had the boat out was spring break on Ft Myers beach. What an eventful day that was... It started with the Lani Kai booty shaking contest, a call to SeaTow around dusk, abandoning ship, and me coming back for my boat around midnight... Well, I guess it's a story for the Gathering!
PS, Gran- I just added another piece to the collection! SW M&P 357sig, ordered online (got a steal of a deal from CDNN sports, for $399 NIB and it included a laser for the rails!). Fun!
-
Mike, I won't be there, but great to hear from you!! :thumleft: :thumleft:
-
Wow Mike can't wait to hear this story.
-
Cinco de Mayo
-
I wish I could make this, but I am headed down to Pine Island the 10th to do some fishing and I dont think I could get the wife to approve a trip two weekends in a row. Leave some fish for me, and give me a report about how the fishing is when you guys get back. I am hoping to hear there are some good Tarpon Pods swimming off the beach.
-
How'd you get the nod on going down on Mother's day Weekend? Unless she's going with you.
It'll be a blast.
Thursday Night
Northwest winds 10 knots becoming southeast after midnight. Seas 1 to 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Friday
Southeast winds 10 knots becoming west in the afternoon. Seas 1 to 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Friday Night
Northwest winds 10 knots. Seas 1 to 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Saturday
West winds 10 knots. Seas 1 to 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Saturday Night

It helps to not have kids when you want to go somewhere on Mothers day weekend. This will probably be the last time since one is on the way. Then again, most of my buddies going have kids. it may be that the best mothers day present is peace & quiet.
-
I hope she has 300 or so gals on hand. If you stop in this week warn her
Good idea
Did you get a chance to warn her Scott?
Tomorrows the day

I tried looking up the phone number but couldn't find it. I thought you went by there often - sorry, didn't want to sound like it was a demand or anything. We have a plan B if they don't have enough.
-
Just a few hours now - "making the list and checking it twice". Will pick up all the food and ice in the morning and then fuel up on the way down there.
So we'll monitor Ch 68 for whomever wants to contact us.
-
No problem, i do usually go by there a few times a week, just didn't happen this week till tonigt.
Rick i decided to go get gas tonight, one less thing to do tomorrow since i will be getting a late start, it's 4.15 and they said the had plenty, told the guy you and Dave would need atleast 300 gallons.
Side note, my flow scan was only off by .5 gallon
-
Good idea on getting the fuel tonight.
For us "east of the interstaters" it make sense to plan a route past there in the morning/noon and then continue down 41 to 776. I really like that cruise - nice route.
-
Looking even better: (Forecast.weather.gov)
Tonight...Northwest winds 5 to 10 knots becoming southeast after midnight. Seas 2 feet or less. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A slight chance of thunderstorms.
Friday...Variable winds around 5 knots becoming west around 10 knots in the afternoon. Seas 2 feet or less. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Friday Night...West winds around 5 knots. Seas 2 feet or less. Bay and inland waters smooth.
Saturday...West winds around 10 knots. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Saturday Night...West winds around 10 knots. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
Sunday...West winds around 10 knots. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon
-
We might be wishing for more wind tomorrow night
-
W wind ten knots....Perfect
-
Its nice in south boca with a light breeze and calm water
-
I cant believe you are coming way down here and I wont be able to make it. I have been working 7 days a week and tomorrow I have to take the Cheoy Lee out. If things change I'll be there. Have fun and take alot of pics. Just in case where will you be on Sat?
-
Josh, thank you young man...we are entrusting you to provide the membership with accurate, true reports.
Hope you are good with that son.
That is...no exaggeration. If Rick lost a pinfish...he lost a pinfish.
If you see pirate skanks dressed in orange...just say so.
Thank goodness for you Josh.
:thumright:
-
Doc we will be in fosters bay, and don't worry Scott I will
-
It's nice in foster's bay. All the other boats seem to like it too.
-
For more of the story...
Both of Dave's engines had issues on the way out Friday so he idled back to the ramp Saturday morning and called it a weekend :(
CH and I cruised to Fosters. Popular place with the locals - all the access points to the beaches were taken already.
We cruised around and fished Fosters and about noon Glock arrived.
We barged up and cooked burgers, dogs and brots. Didn't get any pics of that little party. We hung out until 2 and decided since no one else was coming, we'd head out into the gulf and do a little fishing. Headed out through Redfish pass - boy was my chartplotter wrong on the channel there - seems the channel it had was non-existent in real life.
We fished for a couple hours and then decided to head in - I looked at my phone and saw that I missed a call. It was Capt Matt. I called him back and he was sitting in Captiva Pass, the pass we were heading for at that time.
What a nice boat.

He had a morning charter that day so he couldn't make it out earlier. We chatted away for a while, made plans for the fall gathering there and he took off.
CH and Josh were fishing the pass and then CH hooked up with a big fish - so I don't steal his thunder, he can explain the rest
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data//593/CH_Fishing.png)
We headed back inside to fish the flats - Josh caught some trout dinner and then we decided to head back north for the night.
We arrived at the site where we were going to camp and I started to drop the anchor and I guess the retaining pin mousing wire had rusted away which I hadn't noticed. Next thing I know the pin pops out, hits the deck and continues over the side and then the anchor drops right through the end of the pulpit and it goes it without the chain attached, leaving me standing there staring at the end of the chain in my hand and nothing else  Bummer, that was a nice anchor - the water clarity was terrible plus there are a lot of sharks in the pass....
It was a nice moonrise though
(http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data//593/Transformed_IMG_2567.PNG)
-
Rick its good to finally put a face with a name, glad CH got some action in the pass.
Yes that pass is shark fest
Capt Matt
-
Sorry I didn't post earlier, had my hands full with my site today.
Capt Matt it was great to meet you, it was short but atleast we met.
Mike it was good to see you again, we need to get together soon.
The big hook up in the picture got of what ever it was, almost spooled me, chased it with the boat and when we got to it nothing, i believe it was one of those endangered bottom fish they call rocks
Anyhow it was great meeting up with Rick and Dave again, they are great camping partners, sure won't let you go hungry, i have some pics I will post up later, but not to many because hardly anyone showed again, I'm at the point why are we even doing it anymore but that's a discussion for a different day.

I was looking forward to this event but it was not to be. I did end up on the water, however. I took the Cl to the last tower before the tortugas and back. It was a nice 24 hr ride with only a few issues. Lost the starboard genset and half of the running lights failed. (they worked at the dock before we left) The genset had a bad temp sensor, so thats fixed now. The running lights have all been replaced with LEDs , so that should be fixed now.
I'm sorry i missed the get together. I have always had a good time when I have been able to attend. The decks on my poor boat are turning green:( But it looks like i will have some time off soon to clean her up and burn some fuel.
I didnt see any hooters girls this time??

Doc to bad you couldn't make it but it sounds like you had quite the adventure anyway.
Hooters girls are so 2011 and we're hip you know

Doc, we'll be back one more time in your area - Nov 2012. Usually the first week so make a big circle or note on your calendar so nothing else works it's way into this one.
I may be back down there sooner looking for my anchor - bought a big magnet at HF so I can troll for it.
