Trolling Motor Shaft Lenght ?
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:05:39 PM »
I am the new owner of a 1977 222 and would like to put a trolling motor on it. I did a few searches and couldn't really find info on other people who have added one. Any help would be nice. I'll try to put a few pictures of it on here.

Mike.

I went with a 80lb trust 60" shaft on my 200CCP.  Works great.

If you have the room to stash the 2 batteries required for a 24V trolling motor - go with the most powerful you can afford.  I wish my 170 had room

In order to go with a 70-80 lb. motor, it will be a 24 volt model.  12 volt models top out around 55 lbs thrust.

You are wasting your money if you don't go at least an 80# motor on a 222.  The least amount of wind or current will override a 12V troller on that size boat.  You will be running it on high most of the time which will drain a battery in short order.

What JJ said - a 12 volt motor just isn't enough on a 22 footer.

Barely enough on a 170 - against a 7 mph wind - forget it.

My 80lb pushes my heavy 176 about 3-4 mph against a 5 mph wind, a cross wind is tricky as well, so go with the biggest.

I have had more than one person make smart alec comments about me having a 24V 80# on my 15+ ft. flats boat but I never notice wind or current.  Just twist the handle a little and keep on trucking.

If I were rigging a 222 for my local conditions I would save my $$ and get a 36V.  Fishing near the inlets on full and new moon tides takes some power.
