Weight of a new engine?
« on: July 26, 2020, 03:09:44 PM »
My 1989 Johnson looper 225 hp is much lighter than the 4 strokes I see. Even the new 2 strokes are much heavier.. The Sally Carol is a 1982 25XF. Will a new engine at about or more than 600 pounds be safe? Thanks, Gary
Maine25XF. Late to the gate we love our boat. Others are humbled by the Sally-Carol. We treat her like family, only better! If you have any tips, insights, or positions on the health benefits of two-stroke exhaust,  please opine and inform. Gary

Let's take a look.
Your hull was rated at 280 hp in the early 80s. To get that, you would mount twin 140hp motors. A 140 weighed
just north of 300lbs (as shown in the OMC catalog). If the motor you're thinking about is at 600lbs. it would appear to be ok. Thing is with twins, the weight is spread out a little more than with a single but the most important thing is your transom condition.

Has the 1982 transom been rebuilt or are we looking at a factory original?

Good luck.
