hey guys - hope everyone is doing well. I have a 1979 aquasport 17'  with a 70 hp evinrude. My throttle shifter is very very hard to move forward or reverse. If i pop it out into neutral, it shifts fine...meaning i can give gas easily. What could the problem be? All help is ppreciated

Well, Arnaldo, the usual test is needed here.  It's evident that the throttle cable is working fine, so disconnect the shift cable from the engine (just where it attaches to the shift linkage, leave it in the retainer) and see how it feels.  But, as Doc alluded to, if they are old, it just maybe time to swap them out.

Should you decide to get new cables, your next question probably will be, "What length do I need?"  Look at either end of the cables, there should be a P/N stamped on the jacket.  The last 2 numbers are the length, in feet.  And I get all my cables from boatersland.com, they have the best prices I've found, and great service... :thumleft:

For the newer Members (and a few of the older ones too) don't forget to browse the "Resource" forum when looking for parts, ideas and repair tips/tricks.
Members, please feel free to post up your "finds". One can never have too much help you just need to sort it all out.

Here's a good example from that forum.

CB,
As we both unfortunately know, the "search" function on several forums if oft times ignored.  And I guess sometimes we enable that behavior by providing the link in a reply to a post...shame, shame, shame...

BTW, go here...although I think our way is better than what has been prescribed over there...

How's the west coast treating you and the missus?  For that matter, how about the U.S.?  Good to hear from you!

Loving every minute of it. The only thing  negative, is our good credit is worth nothing here so it will take at least another year before we can actually buy a house or a boat for that matter, had to buy my truck on the credit card

But people are great here, like out of the ordinary, no matter where you go and the weather is super  :bounce:

I'm a happy dude, my wife and daughter too

Marc,
Are you down in Orange County, say around Irvine/Santa Ana/Costa Mesa?  My old GF lives in Irvine, nice out there...

Yes, on the limit of the city of Anaheim and Orange, my daughter goes to school in Costa Mesa, my doctor in Santa Ana and I went to Irvine last week to get fire wood for the 4th July, all within 20 minutes drive. We live just beside the Angel's stadium/ Honda Center/ Disneyland

Marc,

...from HS!  She turned 51 last month, I turn 51 in 3 days!  But, yeah, she's still good looking, we keep in touch on facebook...

Laguna's cool, but they serve alfalfa sprouts and weird mayo on the burgers...

Marc,
BTW, have you thought about making a run out to Catalina?  Never did it, but there she sits...

I see that island every-time I go to Newport Beach (surf fishing, 3,4 times a week), when I do get a boat, I will make that run for sure, it's not that far, until then, probably go camping there and see the bisons, but there are so many things to do here, unbelievable

And what I like about California, is that no plans are canceled because of bad weather

Back to the issue.      Try the the rods and cable connections at the motor.        Had a similar issue on a Suzuki DF 140.   Cleaned and lubricated the rods and connections on the motor and issue was resolved.        FYI   Ed

I was going to replace my throttle cable as it is stiff. Was going to ask what length I need, but found this thread. Thanks for the tip, I’ll look for the part number.
