Stage 1 complete
« Reply #15 on: April 07, 2007, 11:28:30 PM »
Phase #1 is complete.

I got the title and registration straighten out.
I've bought a trailer.
I got her off the ground and on the trailer.

Last week I stopped by and talked to Shawn at Stem to Stern, saw some of his work and talked over a few ideas, got a few references to call.
Now that I've got the boat mobile, Monday I'm going to Stem to Stern for a rebuild quote.  I'll probally also stop by Hammerhead and Van Wagoners in St Pete.

Here's a few pics of getting the boat on the trailer. Easier than I expected. My neighbor and I unhooked the trailer from the hitch and tipped it up. The trailer actual pulled itself under the boat! That's great because the bottom didn't get dragged in the dirt and rock.
Also, Miracle Bubbles works great on the bunkers

Thats a nice looking 222 and trailer.  Look forward to having another 222 in the area.  I'm doing one in Palm Harbor.

I'm going to be trailer shopping soon too.  What brand did you get and what options?

Trailer
« Reply #18 on: April 08, 2007, 10:36:19 PM »
Hey Jim,

The trailier is if from Ace Trailers, I actually found this on EBay.
I searched around a bit then spent about a month (once a week) trying to win one of these trailers on EBay at the price I was willing to pay.  Finally won it.

Great trailer, all aluminium I-beam, stainless hardware, disc brakes (comes with 2 on a tandum, florida requires all 4, $250 more).  Terry, the owner, is a really nice guy and easy to work with.
Here's the Ebay link:

You know, I've had this boat sitting around for a long time.  I never really knew what I had until I found this site and started talking to other AS lovers.

I'm really excited about getting this project kicked off.

It's also really cool to see how many old AS owners there are in the Tampa Bay area.
Are there ever any gatherings or group meeting?

Hey Mike,
Check the "Sticky" (top topic) in the Chum section.  We can pick you up from the dock and take you to the get together, just like we're going to do with LilRichard.

Miracle Bubbles???  Now there will be a rush to CVS to stock up.

Concerning the trailer, if I understand your description, the trailer has brakes on one axle.  Most states require brakes on all wheels.  Connecticut does but there is a dealer on eBay, located in CT, that sells tandems with brakes on only one axle.  Trailer is not street legal until brakes are installed on the second axle.

Hey Jim, you are correct. The trailer, as sold on Ebay, has brakes only on one axle. Florida law, like Connecticut, requires brakes on both axles. The manufacturer will sell the trailer with only one axle covered but warns you that if pulled over, you will get a ticket.  I decided to aviod the hassel and paid for the brakes on the extra axle.  8)

What I thought was a 1972 222 AS turned out to be a 1973 222 AS.  I found this out after I got the title situation straightened out.

Pre-HIN (Hull Identification Number) boats are sometimes impossible to date correctly unless there's some design feature that can peg it.

whats the law about the trailer brakes. I will be in pompano beach  early next week. Picking up my 19-6. what do I need to know?. the trailer with the boat has no brakes. that sure would be crappy to get a ticket. You all ready have to pay. to get on their roads. then they charge you more to get off..

Brakes

Many states have a weight limit you have to be over before you are required to have trailer brakes.  In North Carolina, for example, the trailer must be over 4,000 lbs to require brakes.  In Florida, it's 3,000 lbs.  So if you are under the weight and only have brakes on one axle, you are still OK.

You can check out the various state trailer laws at:

My understanding of the law in this state is that brakes are required on all axles based on a trailer load rating over 3k rather than how much weight is actually being carried.  Selling a tandem rated over 3k with brakes on one axle is a lame tactic to sell at a lower price.  Then, after the deal's done, add an "oh... by the way, you need to buy another set of brakes to make it legal".  See examples are on Ebay.  I'd rather pay bust-out retail than deal with that nonsense.

Each state has it's own regs., so it would be best to check what LA requires.
