I've just acquired this old 22' flatback that was abandoned. There is no serial number on it, but I was hoping for some advice on what I just bought. I'm assuming it is a 1960's hull, but regardless I'm excited about the project.
My pictures have too many pixels to upload- I will figure a way to get them uploaded.
Thanks

You can create a photobucket account. Once loaded click on edit photo and resize to 640*480 or 480*640. Once done, click on board link copy and paste link here.
No hid number means it is prior to nov 72 when required. My 72 does not have a HID just a ser#. A letter and 3 digits. Congrats on the find. You have a great boat on your hands.
As always this thread is useless without boat porn
-
If you upload your pix to your gallery on this site (follow the link on how to post pix, in every forum near the top) the site will size them correctly for you automatically and then following the same instructions you can easily post them in this topic.
Congrats on the find.

Excellent! She may not look like much right now, but could end up queen of the fleet. Good on you, you found a hottie. And the cool thing is, no one else around there knows what you have
In the meantime, let's go squirrel hunting....5 bucks for every tree rat we can get to land in the boat!!
Great job Aaron on the pics post. Was trying to throw a few in here for the boys, but couldn't get the slide show to settle down enough to copy. Thanks :thumright:

Question:
When you bought her, how was she listed on the SC registration? That is, manufacturer/model/year.
Asking because judging by her looks....you may have an early model, ie '66/'67. Coburn and Sargent may be shown as manufacturer on the registration rather than Aquasport.
Provenance adds value. Whatever you can find in terms of original owner, original dealer, etc. all the better. As a for instance...spend some time and check out the history of our current flatback rebuilds here.
Looking forward to your build!
-
An older gentleman owned the boat, passed away and left it on his property. Several years later, his children sold the land with the boat on it. The current owners have sold it to me. SC does have some records on it (mostly property tax records), but the last time it was registered is 1999. She is going to mostly be a harbor cruiser/ family beach boat with light duty fishing. I've been searching for a simple boat, shallow draft, pushes easy, and has sexy lines- Finally found it!
-
cool boat, I really like that rail around the console.
Have you gotten it off that trailer yet? Looks a little bent behind the axles, might wanna check how straight the hull bottom is?
I picked up something with about as many leaves inside, a quick blast down the highway cleared out most of them but the critters held on. Bleach is a wonderful thing.
-
I am moving her this week to a working trailer for a serious scrub / bleach and then off to a repair yard. Surprisingly, the floor only has a couple soft spots in it, but will know more as they dig into it. Transom is shot. The rail on the console looks original, but I've never seen another one like it- but I'm a novice on aquasports

The deck on your boat may sag in places after all these years, but won't have any soft spots. It is 3/8th's inch solid fiberglass. No core, no wood....solid glass.
Not worth saving on a rebuild, unless you want to keep her original. But interesting nonetheless....especially for the sixties.
Looking forward to your build :thumleft:

Here she is after a bucket of bleach.

Great work! What is the ride behind her?
Looks like you guys have an assembly line going :thumright:
-
I'm not doing the work myself- she is being reworked by a professional. He did an extensive refit on a 23 Seacraft for me several years back that turned out nice. I think the other boat is an old Wellcraft someone else is redoing.
-
I'm thinking of closing the small open bilge at the transom and just have 2 small hatches- is this what most folks do on refits? My hope is that it will self bail as it appears the floor is 1 1/2" - 2" above the old waterline. Please share any thoughts
-
I think it is looking good and your plan is good. I figured on my 222, that between filling in that drain area in front of the transom and replacing with 3/4 in NidaCore with approx 5 layers of glass total on the sheets, It will raise the drain holes approx 1 3/4-2 1/8 inches over the original water line.
I dont want to raise my deck to much and I plan on taking it into the Gulf and the Atlantic. The freeboard will be nice to have.

Updated photos, stringers repaired, new floor going in

That is looking good. Looks like NIDA Core was used for the deck? Moving fast, keep it up :salut:
-
Coming along quickly - she'll be in the water before you know it.
Going with twins?
-
The new floor and transom are cored. She should be a little lighter too. My intention is to put a single four stroke 150, but have thought about twin 90's. I want her to be capable of mid to low 40's WOT

Starting to make a little progress again
-
Did you re-use the casting deck up front? Looking good - progress is a good thing.
-
Looking good :thumleft: What are you using for fairing compound?
-
We were able to re use the storage hatch portion of the casting platform, but the deck was shot. I'm not actually doing the work, so I'm not sure about the fairing compound.
-
Sure looks different from the first pics you posted. Love seeing the progress.
I have an opportunity to pic up a 1977 22.2 project boat. What would you guys think a fair price would be for it?

Any updates on this? Curious about this boat builders work.

What is the verdict on Spray Rails for a Flatback? if they are needed, I want them to be added before the paint job. My thought was to add 8-10' of rail up front. I'd appreciate any thoughts
There was another 22-2 flatback with the bottom windows dropped off to the same boat yard- not sure if that is yours LosCoons. I'm happy with everything G Crafts has ever done for me. I haven't been in any hurry, so they work on it when they are slow

Good stuff, CB. I had forgotten about a lot of those discussions, and I was even part of many of them :bangbang2:.
I talked to Robb at Young Boats a few weeks ago about spray rails. He feels that if installed on a 22' boat, the rails should be about 13 feet long or so to be most effective. Economically, anything over 8' is going to cost a bunch on shipping. The prices I got from Robb on some of the Barbour rails (without shipping) were $5.50/ft for the R1002 and R1010, and $12/ft for the R1059 (which is what lilrichard used IIRC). See here for dimensions and drawings of these styles http://www.barbourcorp.com/marine-prod-sprayrails.htm. I forget the shipping prices - maybe $100 or so? So we are talking about $250 - $400+. Overall not too bad, but I'm still undecided. I plan to add trim tabs, so if what Captain Matt and others say still stands, that may be the better investment.
Also, what are you planning to use for paint? I'm using gel coat, and the recommendation from Barbour and Robb Young was to not gel coat them. They come in white or black, and are UV resistant, and would be installed after my boat is gel coated (if I do install them). Barbour said that if I really wanted to paint them, use Awlgrip or something like that. But I got the impression that painting them may lead to problems down the road. I would recommend that you check with the manufacturer before you put anything on them.
-
i dont have any on mine and after putting a few hours on the boat in some slop in the bay, with a confused swell and wind on the beam, boat remained dry. on the other hand, i will be having an isinglass enclosure made for the lower station. mainly to block wind/rain on colder/crappier days

The hull is painted in Matterhorn White. The gunnels are to be painted next week and then glass the console in. Making a little progress
-
Looking good. What did you decide on the spray rails?
-

Came out very nice. Hope to have mine done this weekend now that the rain is more predictable.
Craig I guess the spray rails are out since he said he wanted to add them before paint.
-
I bailed on the rails since most folks think they are unnecessary.
Now I'm trying to figure out how many horses to put on the back- 150, 175, or 200? I want to be able to do 45mph with a couple people on board wide open and cruise about 30
-
Paint job looks great. Did you spray or roll.
-
It was sprayed
-
Thanks. After I looked again I could tell. Looks great.
-
I need some advice on horsepower. I'm not putting a bracket on the boat. I want to be able to comfortably cruise 30 kts with a couple adults on board and 40kts (45 mph) WOT. Looking to put a four stroke Yamaha 150/175/200, but want to put a 150 if possible. Any input would be much appreciated

Finally got to sea trial her! With a new F 150 and Yamaha prop 14 1/4 x 17p, I managed 44 mph at 5800 full of fuel.

Nice work! She's a real beauty. Sounds pretty quick too.

sounds perfect. What rpm do you turn at cruise? Any fuel burn numbers yet?
-
At 4000 rpm, I bounced between 29-30mph and the digital tach said 6.3 gallons per hour
I'll be back on the water next weekend with lots more time to play around

Thanks everyone!
I have some carpentry work left to close up the console and the opening under the casting deck. Has anyone used Ipe ( South American Ironwood ) with success? I use it in home building because it's bulletproof
-
Can anyone tell me what size shaft is needed for a bow mount trolling motor? Is 60" enough?
Thanks
-
I use a 60" motor guide Xi5 and unless I'm in high chop it does not break the surface.
-
I think I saw this thing near Wappoo.
-
i had a 60 on mine, which worked fine on the flats and really calm water, but a 72 inch works better, especially if fishing in any kind of chop.
both Neill (merkin222) and i have 72 inch I-pilot's

Nice, I thought it looked familiar. I just moved off of James Island and my 170 is a Tennessee lake queen now.
