Jack Cravelle...would you eat it?

All of us FL boys have caught at least 1,000,000 jack cravelle EACH over our fishing lifetimes, it never has occurred to me to try and eat one...so would you guys?

Maggie loves smoked mullet, and I love sting ray meat sauteed in butter, so it's not like we are averse to "different" fishes (I know, LOT'S of people like smoked mullet).  But jacks?  Nah, I don't think so...

Jacks are like Unicorns around here. I had one next to the boat when I was 9, and it got off the line. If I was ever lucky enough to catch one, I'd eat it as part of the celebration.

I wonder if you brining  it or soaking it in milk would help the strong flavor?

Jessie, if you get to move down here, you will quickly lose the unicorn reference to one of our most populous fishes.  I didn't say popular, just populous...

I have have ate them. Can't speak for transplants. Not bad really if you like fish.

Mackerel again is like eating an oily rag. Love it though. Maybe that's why a JC isn't off my table.

Should taste like amberjack. As CB says, cut out the bloodline....then....soak for 30 min. in Sun Drop if you can find it, or Mt. Dew if you can't.

We have a fish we call Yellowtail.
I do believe it is a Amberjack?
The fish is quite good.
We usually wrap in foil and BBQ.
It is also served at the Sushi bar.

It's in the Carangidae (jack) family which also includes specatacular table fare like pompano and permit.   AJ's are generally considered to be perfectly acceptable fare if not wormy, and I personally have had grilled rainbow runner and pan fried bar jack, and VERY much enjoyed both.  Heck, those goofy lookdowns make some of the best sandwiches I've ever had (right behind triggerfish!).  But I have to admit I've never had Crevalle.  In my opinion, there's no real reason to run away from it 'cept the "stigma".  Kinda like turning your nose up at a well prepared plate of grunt even though it's still white, flaky, sweet and delicious just like the much more popular snapper.

The only throwing grunts get on my boat is in the igloo   Cooked that night as appetizers before the grouper

Bob ill let you know in a month or two. we keep seeing mixed reviews so we are gonna keep one and give it a try. theres nothing that makes them not edible so whats the harm

Corey, I'd treat it just like any other dark meat, oily, bloody fish.  Bleed it out, maybe soak in milk like Bruce mentioned, a good marinade, and off you go!  Worse comes to worse, ya learn something new...

Guys...trust me on the Sun Drop/Mt. Dew marinade.

We use it on bluefish, spanish and king mac. Makes a BIG difference, grilled or fried...give it a whirl

Exactly where my heads at. its funny the guys who wont eat jack will eat king fish balls like candy. im not a fan of kings but will keep a couple through out the year for fish dip and smoking. jack might smoke just like king for all i know

Regardless of the fish and its prep...usually makes a good fish salad
