Buying my first Aquasport 19-6. A few newbie questions.
« on: April 10, 2021, 10:49:11 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I bought my first aquasport last week,  a 1972 19-6 Center. Unfortunately the boat had zero paperwork although I finally have a way to register with one final issue the NY DMV has questioned. They are rejecting the 4 charachter serial no as a HIN. I bought serial E231.  Any one have experience with this issue while registering? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I plan to follow up with this thread while I work on the boat. The seller did a nice job as a quarantine project this year, I plan to add a couple convenience things, rod holders, fish finders, trolling motor, sound system, swim ladder, exc.

Sweet looking 19’6! Nice find!!
I believe federal law did not mandate HIN numbers for boats until 1973.
You should be grandfathered in to register without one. I also have a 1972 19’6 and our Secretary of State(DMV) in Michigan accepted what I had on the plate. E300 for me. Luckily for me the the associate for the Sec of State was familiar with the law and gave me no trouble. Maybe you could try referencing that particular law when registering? Good luck

Thank you! I noticed that law as well saying that any boat built before 11/01/72 was exempt from requiring a 12 digit HIN, although there is no date stamp for the build of the boat so I wasn't sure how i'd be able to prove to them it was exempt.

Sounds redundant but you would not have a E-231 number if you have a HIN and if you have HIN you would not have a E-231. Aquasport did not issue both far as I can tell. There is your time stamp if they will listen to reason?

In the old boats there was a plate on the inside with the E# stamped on it. That was the serial #. Not the HIN. I would talk to them again and tell them again?

Thanks for the responses. I'll try emphasizing there is no HIN and the Serial NO is the only thing we have to work with for registration. Hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Here is an example of a '66 Coburn & Sargent (Prior to the Aquasport Brand) serial number plate - no "E" but the numbers are there.

How did you "buy" a serial #?

Hi Everyone,

She's home. NYS is going to require me to have a 12 digit HIN assigned, but no bid deal. Gives me time to tackle a couple things.

Everything should be easy, although I'm worried about one thing, replacing the fuel tank. The owner was using a portable 8 gallon under the console. I'm assuming It will require replacing lines and the tank (I'm probably missing something).

Has anyone on here replaced a 196 fuel tank? any thing important to note from someone who has been through the process?

Thanks,
           Nick

I have removed the tank and cleaned the box. All fuel lines were replaced by the last owner which is a nice bonus. Now I just need to find a tank. I was looking into the Moeller poly tanks although couldn't find much that would fit height wise. My dimensions appear to be 68 x 24 x 9. Any suggestions?

I would say almost all 196 rebuilds replaced their tank. Check in the 196 rebuilds forum - https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?board=30.0
