That is definitely some longer hauling than I do.  So you might benefit from some radials.  You really need to see how many plies the tires you have now are and what the load rating is.  Switching to a higher load range tire or more plies in the same size may help.  For a Ohio to FL tow with your family I'd personally be looking into a tandem hands down.  If you get a flat or have a hub fail your stuck right where that happens.  With a tandem you can pull a wheel and get to some place safe to get it fixed.

That sounds like good advice. I may try a conversion and will talk to Continental to see if they think it's feasible on the model I own.

Meanwhile, I've posted photos of my axle and wheels in my gallery if anyone is interested in looking and commenting on whether or not it looks like it's time for an upgrade -- on the axle or anything else that looks like it needs attention!

Had the same issue, same trailer, same axle, same salty conditions. Dry wight AS175 with engine weight is only1400 lb +-. I kept wondering wondering why I had to keep replacing tires. Going to the ramp the wheel broke off right at the axle. 3500 lb axle should support that weight. It rotted from the inside out. Everything looked fine prior to that moment it broke. Would have been disastrous if it happened running 70mph down the high way. You just need to be sure.

My .02 worth. Get another galvanized 3500lb axel from the manufacterer with new hubs and bearings and u bolts . Your spindle is bent or your rotten.
