Title: Resurfacing Trailer Spindle
Post by: boatnamesue on April 27, 2017, 11:56:34 PM
I blew out a bearing on my boat trailer.  But now the new 1 3/8 inner bearing will not slide up spindle.  Need to resurface the spindle, even out the high spots.  Most of what i've read suggest using a file along with emery cloth.  Was wondering if anyone has had success using a grinding stone bit, or other type of steel grinding bit, chucked in the power drill to do the heavy grinding instead of filing by hand.

Any other suggestions for methods to tackle this job is welcomed.  Thanks.

A good new mill cut bastard file will cut the high spots out quickly. dont use  a grinding rock. just use the file

A grinding stone will cut a reverse radius into the spindle so don't do that.  A file and emory cloth will work fine.  Keep in mind the inner portion of the bearing does not move on the spindle so you just have to get the thing to slide on there.  For a boat trailer the biggest worry is the inner seal surface.  Even those can be repaired with a stainless steel sleeve

I once had a bearing on a flatbed trailer fail on the highway.  I fixed it using a file. It had a pretty bad spot on top of the spindle even after filing. That was ten years ago and it is still doing just fine as is.

Update and finale:

Took the file and emery cloth to the spindle, both the small and large taper, as well as smoothing out seal surface.  Took about 20min.  Hub slid on as if it were a new spindle.  Appreciate all of the help guys.

No doubt my next chore is to check the other hub for its integrity.
