1973 22.2 REBUILD

I'M A NEW MEMBER WHO HAS BEEN VIEWING THIS SITE FOR ALMOST A YEAR. I BOUGHT A 1973 22.2 CENTER CONSOLE AND HAVE BEGUN STRIPPING THE BOAT DOWN TO DO A REBUILD. THE BOAT HAS NO SOFT SPOTS AND HAS A SOLID TRANSOM. THE CAP IS ALSO IN GREAT SHAPE. I PLAN TO BUILD UP THE TRANSOM OR CLOSE IT IN FOR A 25 INCH MOTOR. NOT SURE HOW MUCH I SHOULD TEAR UP BECAUSE THE HULL IS IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE.

I WILL HAVE SOME QUESTIONS THAT I'M SURE WILL SOUND STUPID, BUT I WILL ASK SO I DON'T SCREW UP. THIS IS MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT A REBUILD. AFTER VIEWING LIL RICHARDS BOAT AND SOME OTHERS ON THIS SITE, I COULD NOT PASS UP THE CHANCE TO REBUILD A CLASSIC. I WILL POST PIC'S WHEN I FIGURE OUT HOW.

Sorry about the all caps. Bad habit. I'm not a texter and I type that way at work. I'm going to try to take some more pic's today and get them posted.

I have already removed the cooler seat and will finish taking off the center console today. I have looked at alot of the post and realize most people have wet foam in the stringers. My big debate now is if my floor is solid should I rip it up to check the foam. The parts of the stringers I can see from the rear hatch and from the gas tank area appear to be in good shape. There appears to be no seperation from the hull. The only issue I have with the floor is the rim around the tank lid needs some minor repair.  

Any input about the floor would be greatly appreciated.

If the screws holding the seat, console, & anything else down onto the deck have always been sealed you're probably in good shape as far as the stringers/deck go, assuming the screws went all the way into the stringers.  Also any cracks in the outer hull along the chines?  How about along the hull where the inner stringers lie?  Any gouges from loading back onto the trailer?  The galvanized trailers with rollers had some pretty sharp edges and thats pretty much all you had back in the 70's.  Any failure of the things above can let water into the stringers, don't really need to separate the stringer from the hull.
How about blisters in the hull?
Can you punch a small hole at the base of any of the stringers, preferably towards the back of the boat, see if any water oozes out?

Hello PD,

Looking forward to seeing some pics.  But to guess about the flotation foam?  Its wet and heavy.  Most guys would probably not mess with it if the sole is firm. But, if the foam is wet then flotation is degraded and you are carrying a lot of extra weight.  In my rebuild I estimated the old foam was holding about 600 pounds of water and gas (weighed a few of the 30gal trash bags).   Also, if it is wet then the plywood core is getting repeated condensation against the unprotected bottom side of the plywood core.  That will eventually cause soft spots and result in cracked glass.

However, considering the vintage and not seeing the condition or how it was maintained you may be in luck.  A certified marine surveyor could tell how much moisture is hiding in the hull.  For a few hundred bucks on a survey it could save you a ton cash and time or give you a fairly certain knowledge that you need to "go all the way."

Pete,

With a new message window and photobucket open.  Switch to photobucket and point at the pic you want to post.  A dropdown list will appear.  Select the IMG Code, right click and select copy.  Return to the message window and paste.  Preview the message and you should see you image.

Its easy once you get it figured out.   :)
