Hey guys.......Just purchased a 1988 222.   After reviewing some of the posts on the forum, I know the gas tanks can be a problem.  I am looking for opinions on what is going here.   This is the hatch behind the center console.  There is some wet goo on top of the gas tank.  Im not sure if anyone else has ran into this before.  Could this just be from water leaking into the hatch?  I am trying to avoid taking the big main hatch off since the floor is solid but think it might be necessary to inspect gas tank.  What do you guys think?

Does it smell like gas?  I think it is just residue from water leakage onto the top of the tank.  It wouldn't hurt to remove the tank access panel and see the whole shabang so you know exactly what is going on.  Maybe the tank area is full of water? Wouldn't be the first time that was discovered.

No gas smell....just a wet goo. I m going to end up removing the entire large hatch over the tank. This makes me suspicious there is standing water in this compartment. I was hoping to not remove center console but feel its necessary.

Ok Rick....check it out.  Console was removed and hatch pulled out.  The previous posts pics of the wet goo was due to the hatch leaking rainwater.  This is the only area that is suspect.  There is no gas smells and no water in box.  The bad news is I see corrosion underneath the old straps.  None of the corrison is all the way through the aluminum but its close.  What do you guys think.  Am i good to just epoxy corroded areas and fix my leaky hatch or should I yank the tank?

Help me out here.

Have you pulled the tank and viewed the bottom (think under the straps)?


If not, I think you will find as much or more corrosion there also. Even if the tank isn't holed, it won't take much (especially with a full load) to cause a leak. Judging from personal experience and that of other members over the years, you are ready for a new tank. :ScrChin:
