Electrical? My Guess Anyway, Your Thoughts?
« on: August 18, 2015, 06:22:00 PM »
So I have twin 2001 Evinrude 150s. The left engine decided one day it wasn't going to shutdown even when turning the key off and pulling the safety cord. Had to turn the Perko battery switches to off and found out the tilt/trim switch, either on the engine or at the helm kills the engine. Hmm, bad ignition switch. Had the Evinrude dealer put a new switch ignition switch in, the results:
Motor still does not turn off except when turning off battery switches and pressing tilt/trim
RPM and fuel gauges no longer work, they did previously
Engine starts when key I'd turned to "on", no need to turn to "start"

So, I'm thinking someone at the dealer wired the new ignition incorrectly, I replaced the right one with no ill effects. I haven't had a chance to check the wiring on the dealer switch yet. If I check the new switch and it's wired correctly do you think it could be a bad Perko switch?  I'm suspecting bad ignition rewired wrong or bad Perko. I have checked every wire to motor from battery switch back and no corrosion or chafe.  No corrosion on wires in center console. What say you?

Avish moved us to a new Server around 7pm last night, must have grabbed a snapshot in between posts. Bummer.
Have to repost it I guess.  Sorry about that.

Is this a "carbed" engine(s)?

I'll add back my response to fitz that went into the ether.  I realize moving the battery switch while the engine is running is not good; however, it was the only option I could think of at the time, short of finding a screw driver to undo the fuel line.  I tried wiggling every wire known to man on the boat to no avail, it still kept running.  I only tried the tilt/trim switch because I was having intermittent problems with that not working previously and for some reason was inclined to push it (Devine intervention perhaps? :-) )  Anyway, after this event I thought there is obviously corrosion or a short or something. I checked every wire under the motor cowling and from the motor to the battery and battery switch and could not find anything out of the ordinary.  I checked the wires going forward to the console as far as I could see and saw nothing.  The wires in the console itself looked good too.  When I get the chance to get to the boat again I'm going to check the wiring on the dealer installed ignition, I replaced the right ignition switch the week before, and I'm also going to recheck all of the wiring as far as I can see.

Bob, to answer your question, this is a FICHT engine.

Thanks for taking the time to provide suggestions on this, they are much appreciated!

Thanks TY.

I was looking at a wiring diagram to see if something jumped out.

Sorry about Fitz's reply. We've had trouble with Comcast in getting out email replies to new members (as well as older one's too) for years and hopefully this move will help.

Thanks for re-posting, Thunder.  That will help complete the whole image of the problem, to anyone reading.
I am not a motor head but was also looking at schematics and trying to see if anything was in common with T/T and ignition (which maybe the ground seemed to be the only thing) and was actually posting in parallel with Fitz.  I saw that he posted and I deleted my response as he covered much of what I was thinking, so no need for redundancy.  One question I had was whether it was a Ficht or not and you answered that.  The schematics looked different for them.

I have the repair manual and I looked at the same thing, where are these two items electrically connected.  I came to the same conclusion, the ground is the only common and that is in common with the ignition switch too.  I'm just going to have to go through the electrical with a fine tooth comb.  Thanks for all the replies.
