Ok, stupid question- which side down??
« on: June 28, 2006, 12:16:33 PM »
I just realized that I have only dealt with 17 oz. biaxial but not 1708 where the mat is stitched to the biaxial.  Now for the stupid question, which side should be down when laminating?  The mat or the biaxial?  Anything else to watch out for?
Thanks

I place the mat down. Leaves a much neater and uniform surface.  Also stitchmat absorbs a lot of resin to wet-out completely.

Excellent source for material & advice is www.mertons.com.  Been very happy with him as a supplier.

Yep, Mat side down. If you want a smother finish on the last layer, lay a piece of 6oz or 10oz on top.

It's been my experiance that when finishing 1808 it will leave some very small pinholes between the fabric that is exposed. These can be a mother bear to get filled in. I have spent ton's of time trying to do it with diffrent substance's.

A layer of 6oz on top cures the problem.

Thanks for the tips.  Right now I am reinforcing some and forming other stringers.  I have 6 oz cloth for finishing the floor and other exposed areas, will lay it over the 1708.
