When I had the innerliner tore out to replace the transom in my 1984 17', the only place that was foamed were the inside of the stringers and a little between the hull and liner.  The rest is absolutely wide open!  Hope that helps.

My 1976 170 had foam on the inside of the stringers and on the outside of the stringers between the stringer and outer hull the entire length of the boat.  Not sure about the 1979 model year.
