19-1 rebuild
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:18:50 AM »
I got my hands on 1971 19-1, it has all the usual issues! I'm glad to see that there are other boats like it on the forum. This is a very unusual hull design and I'd be very interested to get feedback from others about draft, performance, ride etc. I'm doing a full restoration/rebuild and will post pics shortly. Thanks I'm sure this forum will be an invaluable resource throughout the project.

Hey Coastal, nice boat!
I have the same exact boat with identical issues. I actually purchased mine, running, for 3400, I think they may have seen me coming. Mine has a few bells and whistles such as a T top, radio VHF, and GPS. Will post photos soon.
It's a center console with a 1993 V4 140 looper that runs. I'm planning on swapping the mid and lower section with a newer one which I picked up on craigslist for cheap. Have to purchase a service manual...
I'm thinking semi-complete rebuild depending on the the shape of the stringers and hull and such. I may just cut the top of the stringers and re-foam? The floor is definitely coming up. The transom has a crack similar to yours. The front section with well also needs attention as there is rot underneath the well from a leaking pipe.
This boat has been bumming me out big time. I started tinkering with things and one thing led to another now the boat just sits. I'm not a boat guy but extremely handy and have been doing a bit of research so I think I'm ready.
Thank you for the inspiration to start mine. I know it's going to be a long and pricey road but due to the lack of resources its going to go slow, really slow.
Any advice anyone has for a novice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Stringers seem to be in good shape.
Looks like there is a drain hole in the bottom of the storage in the casting deck - did it just drain onto the subfloor under the casting deck?

While the casting deck is out you might want to improve the gutter drain so it can drain somewhere.
Here is what I did to my casting deck

I cut a new hatch into the wasted area

I cut this out between the two hatches

and inserted a piece of split PVC in the cut

and glassed it in (you can look at my rebuild for all the missing steps)

You could do the same thing and let the water drain onto the sole - better than just sitting in the gutter to evaporate?

You have and Osprey :thumright: I myself am rebuilding the same boat and spoke with 2 other owners who have the hull. 1 is running and the other is the same shape as mine  The running one said Full transom is the only way to go, but if you cant then at least raise the transom to 25" and put up splash guards to help and run your jack plate. I also took measurements from the other original hull for deck height and such. How do you like that 8' casting deck. You can have  a party on it as it is so big

I see you took the ring cap off. I hope you braced it to keep the curvature from stern to bow. I recommend getting the deck all the way off and remove all foam. DO a through cleaning before you touch the stringers to get a visual of what damage you have/don't have. I'd leave them alone till you get the transom done as well so you dont get a hook. Also brace the hull top sides due to the ring cap being removed before you do any stringer or transom work to stop outward lying of the top of the hull. And 1 last thing, where are your located?

If you research a similar hull, look at the old 19 Mako from the 60-70s, as they are really similar. Here is a photo of a 1969 Mako I found on the web

Hey Avid what are you seeing number wise for the 140 looper? Just take your time and gather your supplies and keep using the boat if you can. This way you don't get stuck and loose patience. Oh 1 more thing, where you are located at?

Hey Avid, this is an old thread, since you have your own boat, start a new one and put all your questions there. We will be glad to help.   Oh and lots of boat porn is required here
