Title: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: TheKid on January 12, 2011, 03:13:00 PM
Just curious...there seems to be a ton of the center consoles and walk-arounds but only a few FF's.

Me: 1979 22-2 Family Fisherman w/ Tohatsu 140hp

Who are you and where are you?

What cool things have you done or want to do to improve this platform?

I haven't really got into my boat yet. Planning on starting this weekend cleaning everything and giving the motor a once/twice over.

The only pics I have:

I have since removed pin stripes, waxed hull, dressed up wiring in splashwell, repaired battery boxes and added second VHF and antenna.

I really like the idea of moving the batteries and trim motor forward of the fuel tank.

I also plan on building boxes for storage/kill box under passenger seat and building a leaning post with storage for the captains chair.

Might even ditch the splash well too for more room. Could gain a good 18-20" of space.

More to come. I'm just getting started.

And no, I haven't forgotten about the fuel tank.

Here are some more recent pictures. Still dirty, doing all the prep for opening day.

New Radar
Point-1
EP-60 Fuel Flow Sensor
Rewire new anchor light

Sure you cant see most of that. But More pics are good!

So here she is in the current state.

I think you should ask for a registry for all FF models. The 170, 19-6 and 22-2. There was a 170FF which I had never seen before was for sale a couple of weeks ago on Craigs list. Really cool little FF. We had a brand new 22-2 FF in 76' with the "NEW" V6 200 Johnson. The first ever V6 outboard. Quite a cool boat to drive around in when your 16 and by yourself! Man could that thing jump wakes!!!

1975 22' Family Fisherman sitting in the backyard covered in snow.  200hp Yamaha Salt Water series sitting on side of garage, also covered in snow.  Trailer in pieces next to Yamaha.  Come hell or high water that boat will be on a plane this summer!

I like the idea of a seperate registry.

Here she is:

I am the owner of a 1979 22-2 FF with a 200 Merc Black Max. I finished up the water worthy issues last fall and got in a couple of short runs. I like the ride and stability of the design , there are a couple of odd features but thats what makes them unique. As other posters mine is covered in snow near Dunkirk NY , but spring will begin my first full boating season and the walleyes are calling!

Thanks for the title change. Makes sense to me.

I took her out for the first time this weekend. Dropped in Santa Cruz Harbor.

3-6' @13sec/wind waves 1-2'/ wind 10-15knots. She ran up and down hill great. Quartering  she would dig and pull like crazy. I tried adjusting trim, but my tabs have the joystick control and it was hard to tell if the tabs were actually doing what I was asking. I am going to ditch the stick for independent control of the tabs.

Still fun. Got 32mph at 5200 with a 17" prop when hiding from the wind and swell.. I didn't time the plain. This prop looks to be as old as the hull. Still in good shape but pretty flat. I'm wondering if some of my Merc props will fit the Tohatsu. Both 15spline exhaust.

Anyway...glad to hear from all of you. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I dig deeper.

Pictures would be great if you have them. You can post them or links to them.

Peace,Mahalo!

Awesome....Exactly what I am looking for!!!

A few questions.

Where did you get the arch? Cost? Model Number?

Are the passenger seat boxes custom? Or are they from another mfg?

Arch I had custom built locally, been on boat about 12 years. If my memory serve me it was about $1200. I installed it myself. Being in auto body repair my entire life and owning a collision repair shop the seat box I built myself out of 1/4" plywood then glassed and painted. Only regrets are I should have joined this site years ago, probably would of done things a little different.

I purchased a 1980 22-2 FF in Nov.of 2010. It has a 2001 150 HP V-6 Mercury which is in excellent condition. It needs a lot of TLC but I'll get it done a little at a time. All in all it's not in bad condition just ridden hard and put away wet.

Sweet set up.  I've been looking for a hardtop or tower for mine and I was wondering what it would do to the balance of the boat.  Can you share any info on horsepower, cruise/max speed and how it handles with the tower?  It looks like a modified v hull.
Title: Re: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: blueciviccoupe on August 19, 2011, 09:20:00 PM
well i have only had it for about a month now but it seems to handle great, its got a 120 johnson it tops out at 34mph gets up on plane very fast, it does feel a little top heavy at times but not to often i would imagine most tower boats seem to feel that way at times, but over all its a stable boat on the water.
Title: Re: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: blueciviccoupe on August 19, 2011, 09:21:06 PM
dont know if you noticed or not but it has a fold down tower with controls up top as well as the hardtop
Title: Re: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: Curious on August 20, 2011, 06:50:07 AM
I did see that fold down portion, nice layout.  Is that a 19 or 22?  I would have thought a 120 would be underpowered for a 22.
Title: Re: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: blueciviccoupe on August 20, 2011, 09:00:06 AM
its a 19-6 i thought for sure it was gonna be way under powered with all the extras but i am quite happy with the performance of it, a little more speed would be nice but i think to much more speed and the boat would probly feel a little unsafe on the water.

I just found this area and am very pleased to see that there are other FF owners out there, I thought everybody was only interested in center consoles. I've had my 1975 222 FF for four years and love it. It spent most of its life on lifts on Marco Island so is in very original condition except for the 1997 Mariner 175 that the previous owner put on to replace the original Johnson 175. The original purchase paperwork and owners manual came with the boat so there is a good history in place. I put in a new tank, did some electrical work and put in a new water pump. She is used for a little fishing, lots of beach runs, dolphin tours, and trips out for lunch at Goodland, as in the first picture.

bripley-
I've got the same boat/same year.  It looks like you have the 20" transom and modified V hull.  Can you give us some numbers on how well she does with that 175 and what kind of ride quality you get with the modified V?
Thanks!

I see about 36 knots on the GPS with year old bottom paint and the top up. That is only a little over 5000 rpm so I maybe should have a lower pitch prop. Top speed is not important to me so I'll leave it the way it is.
I have never run a deep vee so I can't compare the ride. It is some better than my Northcoast 21 (Lema 19 hull) that I have in RI.

Bad news-the Mariner 175 on my 22 FF has terminal wrist pin knock. Good news-my wife agrees that it doesn't make sense to rebuild an antique motor so I will put a new Mercury 150 4 stroke on the boat this week. I'll let everybody know how it goes.
This decision is difficult, I think if I didn't love the old AS so much I probably would have just dumped the boat and picked up something else in a used boat. How can you justify a brand new motor on a 36 year old boat otherwise?
Title: Re: The Official Family Fisherman Registry - All Models
Post by: RickK on March 04, 2012, 04:55:43 PM
Once you get the boat the way you like it, like I did with my Explorer, it's hard to rationalize not keeping it.

Barry, when you get a chance, post your numbers with that 150 on the "Data for Yamaha F150 on a 22" thread.  I say an F150 is fine for this boat, others say don't go lower than a 200.  I guess it all depends on how much fuel, how many people, how much extra weight, etc.

Good question.  I've been asking myself why I am about to pour $500 worth of Nida Core into the transom of a 1978 22 FF.  And then there is the fuel tank.  And the trailer that I've already repaired that's a little too small for the boat, and the.......  If I were rich, I probably wouldn't be on this site too often!  Bottom line, the boat you have is the boat that works for you at the price you can afford.

Anyways, check out my thread on my transom rebuild in the "rebuilds" forum.  I'm getting ready to pour with NidaBond.  Plan is to get 'er done in the next couple of weeks.  I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Just found this thread, amd glad I did!  I'm the 2nd owner of my 1979 22-2 FF. my grandfather purchased new in 1979, and I "inherited" in 2002 with his passing. Grew up in Washington, NC and fishing with him in the Harkers Island/Cape Lookout, NC area. I live in Raleigh now, but keep the boat in New Bern, NC and continue to use in the coastal NC areas.

Just repowered with a 2000 model 200HP Johnson. The 1997 200HP Johnson I had suffered a failure in May of 2011. Washed and waxed her up this past weekend to get her ready for the spring. I've made some improvements over the last 10 years that have made the boat more 'comfortable'. I'll post some pictures soon.

I've been lurking for a few weeks, ever since I saw this 1981 222 FF on craigslist. Well, I brought her home today. Quite an ordeal at the ramp. Previous owner had her for 20 years and always stored on davits. Only set her on the trailer when a hurricane was coming. So, needless to say, the trailer was a mess. He installed new bearings I sprang for some tires and he met me at the ramp for the load up. Three hours later we had it secured enough for the 45 mile run back up the Keys to my place. It's in pretty good shape structurally. Cosmetically, we've some work to do, buffing out the gel coat, putting down some deck paint, polishing, etc., etc. Great 150 Yamaha. Thanks for being here. Whenever I start thinking I must be crazy buying a 32 year old boat, I come here for some reassurance.
Well, I just tried to add some pics. Says pic must max 1100 pixels wide and 100 high. When I resize to 100 high the pic is so small you can hardly see it. Maybe someone could enlighten me.

FYI: The pic with the family on the boat isn't me. It's the previous owner. Can't wait to start working on her. Would like to put up some kind of awning over the boat to keep the leaves out and give a shady place to paint the deck. Don't know if I should spend the big bucks for something strong enough to handle the winds we get here in the Keys or something cheap I set up just when I'm going to work on her. Will soon buy a cover but not until the new, taller bimini is on.

Wish mine looked half that good when I got it. Of course, that made the price a little easier too.

Just picked up this 19-6 in overall in good structural condition. Needs some buffing and cosmetic touch ups (paint eventually) and the worst thing is I need to do is fabricate a new tank. Ready to start tinkering and for some warm weather to start enjoying!

I was wondering where all the FF's were......good to see there are a few out there...Is the I/O I have rare?  I almost glassed in the hole and got a bracket but read that they are sensitive in the rear and found a low hour 470 cheap, less than the cost of a fiberglass motor bracket. PLUS, If im not mistaken, the 222 came with the 470 originally.

Rare?
Well as you have seen , we don't get a lot of them here but....
They were offered with the I/O option and I'd guess that was somewhat popular at the time.

As to the 470...no idea but here's a pricing/options sheet from 76. note listed I/O options.

Where did you hear the sensitive issue. I just want more deck and the extra floatation. I would have done it.....but like they say if it aint broke.....

I looked at closing up my transom and installing a bracket on  my FF when I had to replace my transom.
I opted against going that route. Just too much uncertainty about the final outcome as far as how is the boat going to handle with the new mods.

I was afraid it might just end up being a costly mistake.

I cant wait to have the cash to close it up and add the bracket. I dont mind the risk....that's where all the fun is!!!

I actually read about the sensitivity on this site somewhere.  I also talked to a few people who think that the I/O might actually handle just fine, less the deck robbing cowl.  Plus, I found a low hour 470 with a trailer for 1200.00 and it runs perfect so it was a no brainer for me.  I will let you know how mine goes when it sees the "big pond"

Thanks...Will do!  I might need to talk to "Aaron" about the alternator conversion if he's still around.  I heard the 470 stator and water cooled voltage regulator may be a little unreliable and I do have big plans for trips to Montauk, Block island and other great fishing grounds in the area.  Although a sea tow membership is cheap.....

Well ad me to this club. After FINALLY selling my 21 mako my brother and I bought a 1978 246 Family Fisherman yesterday in pretty nice shape on an aluminum trailer for 800 bux and we already have a 225 Suzuki four stroke that should push it nicely.
We'll probably have to redo the transom before we strap on the new motor but otherwise the boat is in its original unmolested condition and even the teak is still there and in good shape.
Does anyone on here have a picture of the original splashwell bench seat they could post here ? Mines missing and I think I'm going to rebuild it in either starboard or fiberglass but I'd like to see one first and I have so far struck out on finding one on the web.
Thanks!
Levi

Add me to the list, 1977 19-6 Family Fisherman.

I sail out of Half Moon Bay mostly for salmon, rock fish and crabs.

Had this old girl since 1992.

150 Evinrude DFI added in '04. Didn't have E-Tec in 150 at the time, but that said, the DFI doubled my mpg over the 150 2 stroke Suzuki it had when I got it.  No smoke at all and EPA 3 star rating. Kicker is a 15hp long shaft electric start/producing 2 stroke.

Please note the Corian gunnels. I replaced the teak first thing, then got the rails made.

Probably still have the teak laying around if anyone is interested.

Christina your boat is beautiful! Would love to see more of her. Your post inspired me to post my own 1977 19-6 FF.

Got her about 2 months ago and the work has been steadily in progress to get her more seaworthy, can't wait to splash! Pleasantly surprised with her bones the further I dig, quite dirty in the pictures however.

I see you have an igloo sitting across the back.

Look at my pics above and you will see that I use two 128 qt coolers along the sides, attached by the handle to the seat post.

One is the fish box, ice, fish, bait etc.

The other is the dry storage, lunch, clothes, supplies.

Lots of deck space on this model!

Also, I took a rod holder commonly found at marine supply houses, replaced the thin PVC tubes with thicker PVC I cut and shaped - easy to do - and added the rail hangers to them. You can see one in the pics. Makes life easy when rigging a rod, no rod across the deck to trip on.

Spent the day today at the boat yard shagging down a bad wire to my bilge pump. Simple job turned into 3 hours, but I found it buried in the inspection port on the starboard side.

Can't wait to get the deck bloody again. :)

Thanks Rick! A little more elbow grease and she'll show 10x better than these pictures suggest.

I'm liking your setup going fore and aft better Christina, though I'd probably go with 90 or so quart coolers for my use. I'm holding off to see how high she sits in the water before changing the setup, the PO used it solely for dry storage but I'm planning on making it a fish box as it's beat up already...a little blood and brine at this point won't hurt it. You have some good ideas!

I agree with you, for the size of the boat there is ample deck space and it really is a nice overall layout with everything being within reach, I like it!

The old 2.5 rule, ehh? Multiply any projected job time by 2.5, it's always little jobs that we turn into projects  . Aside from some transom cap glassing (almost done) and installing my new gas tank, all I have are nuisance projects left  :a0004: .

Let's add another FF to the list.  1980 196 with the modified vee.  Originally slightly underpowered by a 115 Evinrude.  Then by a 1986 150 Evinrude.  Purchase new by my father.  I've been caretaker and biggest user of boat since new.  Has had new tank, but probably could use another.  Transom cracks were ground out and glassed early on, but cracks came back and now transom needs at least a small repair after an overall check of it.  Boat has seen use at the southern New Jersey coast until the last 10 years when it began a long rest period because it was more economical to buy another used rig rather than repower the FF.  Now I am getting ready to retire and am interested in a project of getting this great boat back into the action.

Hope to share later along with picking some brains, like would the Evinrude 115HO be a good choice or should I go with a Suzuki 140?  I am trying to keep the rear weight down, as it is easier to do than to raise the floor.

Just returned home from picking up this 80 22.2. Originally from NY and owner moved to South Carolina,Now it’s going to live on the west coast. Made the trip there and back in 6 days, lots of virus  precautions but a safe drive. Cheap fuel but a lot of hours. Purchased the boat beginning of March, and owner delivered to Boat Exchange in Lexington, they lifted it off old trailer rolled a new one under it and set it up. I showed up couple days later hooked up and headed west. 2600 miles one way. I’ll get more inside pics later this is my third Aquasport hope last boat project. Does this look like a modified or deep v ?

New member here.  Picked up my '81 22-2 Family Fisherman 2 years ago.  I needed something to get the family out in when we go to the shore, and this old tub was perfect.  That hard top is wonderful. The cuddy cabin also I like also more than I thought I would.  In a week or so I will tear out the birds nest that is the electrical system and do a complete re-wire.  And fix up some of the other cosmetic items.  Nice to find a forum with other owners, so I will be asking many questions.  Thanks.

Shes got a 2016 115hp Etec on the back, a little gutless but gets us to 25mph. Unless I fall into an epic deal on something bigger I'm going to run this motor as long as I can.

Planning to give her a good refresh over teh winter, with new paint and replacing all the wood for PVC so I don't need to worry about it breaking. Really want to rebuild the sliding roof hatch. It leaks where teh bolts go through the rails, and the hatch comes out of the rails when opening unless your super careful.

If anyone has tips on rebuilding/restoring the sliding the hatch and strengthening the cabin roof so it doesn't flex as much, I'm all ears

Looks good, the cuddy deck more than likely the ply they used is compromised. Rot from screw penetrations and top cleat and even the sliding deck brackets. I’m currently doing same repair on my project using 3/4” ply and glass. The pins that slide in hatch brackets may need to be longer so sliding hatch doesn’t come out of brackets? Wonder if someone modified it before.

The Cuddy deck has no ply. Just straight fiberglass with wood ribs running left to right approximately 24" oc

The deck glass has wood bonded to it underneath for strength. Both my FF boats they only put resin on the exposed wood on the inside. Look from inside cuddy , is it carpeted or covered?

It used to be carpeted. I ripped out all the carpet as it was full of ant nests when I got the boat. I have no plywood on the ceiling.
At the front of the boat, I took all the bolts out for the anchor and cleats someone had added, and made a 24" plate washer from 3/16" aluminum and reattached everything through that so the anchor would have some strength instead of just pulling on the glass. I'll get some a couple pictures later, I plan to be working on the boat this morning after getting some chores done.

Here is the inside of the cabin roof. In the front you can see the big plate I made to support the anchor and cleats.
Its all just fiberglass and glue residue with some stringers.

Ok , Yea they stripped the old wood out. Originally Aquasport installed some wood runners that ran along the sliding hatch opening on both sides underneath from the bulkhead to bow front. Between them was ply forward of sliding hatch opening. The bolts go through deck top runners and and lower runners. My 222 FF runners the hatch slides in are stainless steel. Not sure they were original all I have seen are wood as with my 79 19.6.

Could I bug you for some pictures?
I am going to have to rebuild my rails and hatch in the winter. I can't open it without it sticking or popping out of the tracks

I am thinking about replace the wood supports on the ceiling for new material, and then gluing plywood between them, direct to the ceiling and supporting them off the wood runners
