2005 275 Explorer - schematics? Which battery is house?
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:15:27 PM »
Hello,
First - I have three batteries.  One on the starboard side, aligned fore/aft.  Two on the port side.  The inboard battery is alligned port/starboard and the outboard battery is aligned fore/aft.  Can someone tell me which is the house battey?  They are all group 27 AGMs.

Second - is there an official or unofficial set of schematics available for the 2005 275?  I am still trying to understand the electrical system prior to upgrading the switches to BEP 717-100A.
Thank you,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Might help to think what should be attached to these batteries to figure out which is which.  You have twins so that means 2 starting batteries - a given.
Bilge pumps are/should be wired directly to the batteries and should/may have an inline fuse, usually near where it connects to the battery.  May or may not have both legs (+ and -) attached to the battery.  Negative could be attached to a ground block somewhere.
Look at the batteries and see what is attached - your starting batteries may be the batteries that have the bilge pumps and maybe only one has the pumps attached. A lighter gauge wire would be a hint.
The house battery should have a heavier wire coming off the positive and be going directly to a circuit breaker nearby and then heading toward the helm to a be the source of power for a lot of accessories.  Probably a 8/10ga for your boat.
I'm sure SeaBob will be along shortly.
You can also do a search , clicking the search button above and typing 275 explorer batt*

Hope that helps.

As Rick stated.  The easiest way to determine which is which is to pull down your batt switches and see what's attached.  The house batt switch will have the heavy gauge feed coming off the common post, as well as the bilge float switch feeds and stereo memory feed coming off either batt 1 or batt 2.  Most often, builders use the starboard batt as the house batt, seeing as most builders run all the electrical up the starboard side of the boat.  Conversely, the other batt switch, most likely port, will only have the positive cable to the engine coming off the common post...

Thanks Rick and Sea Bob.  I will pull the switches down and see what is connected to what.  I'm having a difficult time getting my head wrapped around three batteries and two switches.  I will be more comfortable knowing what each swith position energizes.
Best,
Mark

Mark,
It is a good possibility that 2 of the batts are wired in parallel, creating a large house bank (still 12V, but twice the reserve capacity)...

GO GATORS!!!  BCS #2, AP #3...that may be a bit lofty!!
