Hello all,

I'd love to find a home for the Saltine, our 170, of which I have so many, many happy memories.  The deck rotted out, and I removed it, planning on a complete rebuild (three years ago, when my son was born) and I'm never going to have time.  It has to go, now.

More details:
-Deck cut out.
-Transom has cracks but is actually still solid.
-Many layers of bottom paint
-Console in workable condition
-Fuel tank I replaced with a new, custom, aluminum, powder coated tank a couple of years before I took this boat out of service.  It's perfect (also drained a few years ago and likely clean and bone dry.
-The stringers could use a patch or two, there may be a bit of delam aft to tab back in.  The foam inside is not so good.  In fact, the foam should all be replaced.
-I have the original cooler seat.
-It's sitting on a custom built roller trailer.  It appears someone built the trailer specifically to fit this boat into their garage.  I'd say the builder was a professional welder.  It's got some surface rust, and wow, it sure isn't pretty, but it's bullet proof.  Bearings were new a few years ago and have never been in water.  Also, the trailer lights are not pretty, but great quality and never been in water.  One tire is new, the other is scarrr-ry.
-Rubrail is original with some cosmetic defects.
-Bow rail is tarnished, but great shape.

-stored in my heated shop for three years.  It's perfectly dry, odor free, no mice, probably a few spiders, but they'll blow out on the highway.

I have an 80hp merc 3 cylinder, fresh water only motor that I would make a fair price on, if that helps anyone's decision, but it's not a package deal or anything.

The bad news, beyond giving up a boat I love dearly, is she has to go, now.  In one week, I'm taking the sawzall and cutting off the bow to make a sandbox for my son, and the rest is going in the dumpster.  I need the shop space to earn a living, now.  I have no outside storage.

I'll get pics up shortly.  Please ask any questions.  I own a marine business (mainly electrical and mainly larger boats), regardless my opinions on boats are without illusion.

Please save this fine, fine boat (quickly).

Thanks,
Mike O'Donnell

Oh, Connecticut doesn't title boats, but it was last registered in my name and I have that reg, so there are no paperwork issues.  The trailer has no paperwork.
Cheers,
Michael O'

Walk around:

That crack on the stringer is the only stringer repair that's probably needed:

That roughness is a combination of fiberglass printing through the gel coat and shop dust.

Here you can see the open crack on the transom.  That's likely due to moisture getting in there and freezing.  While the old motor was still in place (in fact, every year that I used it) I had someone bounce up and down on the tilted up motor while I stood aside and looked for flex.  The transom is still very strong.  One could caulk or epoxy this crack closed and put the transom repair off for many years.  My finger is there to give a sense of scale:

The tank, don't let a little mildew throw you off.  It's perfect.

I left a lip all around to set a new deck onto.  Finger for scale.  I cut it out where the trough was.  You'll need to add a ledger strip there.

The obscenely overbuilt trailer, good bearings, good lights, ready to roll, though you should really bring a good tire, one is new, the other is anything but.  The rust is just on the surface.  That steel is full thickness.

The console and cooler seat with swing back, a bit tough to see in these pics.  I'm fairly certain I still have that teak glove box door and and teak that goes under the console (though some of that is a bit rough).  The teak on the swing back looks rough, but it just needs a sand and finish.

I work on boats every day.  I have no biases, big or small, power or sail.  They all have their utility (and budgets are part of that).  I know the special ones.  For a little, light, affordable center console, fishing, a little tubing and wakeboarding, or just slipping out, or poling skinny water, this is a brilliant boat.  She'll bow steer a bit in a big following if you don't mind her.  These are the old lines before the cost reduced redesign, and she's gorgeous.  I've been the fool and been out in 4'-6' chop in this boat, more than once, I'm not proud to say, and here I am, just fine.  This is a great little boat.  Please giver her a home.

Please ask any questions.

It's just my (very strong) opinion, but if you replace the transom, don't buy in to the hype and raise it.  These boats are designed to dump the green water straight aft.  If she poops it will run right out to a stable level with the motor still up.  When you raise them and they poop, they go unstable and turtle.  Don't underestimate the design!

The tub that holds the fuel tank is pulled, it's just resting in place in above pics.  I went through my files and I'm including the documented location of the center console and fuel tank here.  The pics are in a random order, and I think this is when I had some hard drive issues and they were recovered, so there may be doubles of everything, but if ones zooms and studies, they can pick the dimensions off within an 1/8", which is far more accurate than needed for a console or fuel tank location.  Even if this boat isn't saved, perhaps a future rebuilder of a 170 will find this useful.  To use these pics, match the full view of the foot rule pic, which is what is being measured, to the close in pic, where you can pick the dimension off of the foot rule.

Forward port console location:

Forward starboard console location:

Aft port console location:
Edit, nope, that's definitely the mark from aluminum angle that held the cooler seat:

Fore and aft console location:

This indicates where the cooler seat had been located.  After it's screws pulled through the deck, a previous owner had added aluminum angle to hold it in place.  You can see the witness marks.  The pic is foggy, but the rough dimensions can be picked off.  The problem is, it references the tank coffin.  I'm looking for a pic that locates the coffin fore and aft.

Well that's fun, the Saltine, 9 years ago.  I just found these pics on this forum where you all were helping me with the fuel tank replacement:
