flush mounted bow/running lights

Whats the best brand of the flush mounted running lights? Not the topside/cap style, but the hullside style.  I think I have read about them being called "shark eye" running lights.

Like these ? Not USCG Approved , but a lot brighter , keep the top one and run as Aux lights.

A lot of the "legality" comes down to whether the water cop had a good couple a doughnuts that morning.  The typical "shark eyes", mounted in the hull, are illegal, based on CG requirements.  However, most CG guys will ignore that aspect, unless they have had a stale doughnut...

While I'm not going to look it up for you, google CFR 33, find the specs on nav light placement, it will answer the legality of the subject...

My experience with the "snake eye" lights is that they always get water in them. I prefer the pop up light from Accon.

I was gonna ask the same ?
Had them on my 22' Pathfinder from the factory & never had a prob.
Want to put them on my 17.

"Snake Eye" side lights are legal on boats less than 12 meters (39.4 feet) if installed correctly.  They must be visible for at least 112.5 degrees to the side of the bow centerline.

maybe im using the wrong descrition. Are you saying that the bow running lights that mgfs like Key West, Pathfinder, Shearwater, ect... are all illegal?

This style light is awesome for running at night as you never see them from inside the boat. I had them on my flatsboat and loved them. If you could find them in LED that would be even better

The most common violation concerning navigation lights is improper mounting of the lights.  Follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter.   Makes sure the the lights are properly aligned with the centerline of the boat.   Do not mount lights below the sheer line of the boat. Lights mounted below the sheer line cannot meet the vertical sector requirements.  See note below.

Clarification: The Inland Navigation Rules do not speak to lights mounted below the hull so they are permitted.  The International Rules do speak to lights mounted below the sheer. It says :

The sidelights of a power-driven vessel shall be placed at a height above the hull not greater than three quarters of that of the forward masthead light. They shall not be so low as to be interfered with by deck lights.
This means you cannot have the sidelights below the sheer line of the hull on a boat configured for international rules.  I repeat, on boats configured for inland rules you can use bullseye type lights below the sheer line, but it is extremely difficult to make them comply with the vertical and horizontal sectors and cutoff angles.  

Just saying, there are CG regs out there point out the issues with "shark eye" type lights...

Naw mon, good post. It is what it is.

My feeling is that the lights Mike reps are a terrific safety feature, and although not legal....certainly an attention grabber.

We have ALL been on the water on a dark night, squinting, looking...and damn...if you even see a boat running toward you full-bore...honestly, you pick up the bow light almost at the last. And it looks WEIRD.

These lights he has shown could potentially make a big difference.

I've seen the aftermath of a boat collision, 30 seconds after the fact. Hope you guys never witness one.
