shifting and throttle issues on my Yammy 130
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:48:56 AM »
Took the boat 170 Striper out on test run yesterday. A couple of things happened. 1. I could not shift back to the binnacle to neutral or reverse. 2. 4,000 RPM was the most I got from the boat. Any suggestions or ideas as to the cause or solution? Much appreciated. Thanks. I have a 95 Yamaha 130.

Time to take a look at those shift and throttle cables.  Remove the cables from the shift slide and the throttle linkage on the PH, make sure you can move the slide by hand from N to F, back to N, then to R.  Move the throttle linkage to it's full travel (where it hits the stop) to you make sure you have no binding in the linkage.

If this all checks out, time for new cables.  Yamaha 704 top mount binnacles are almost bullet proof, so it ain't that.  I recommend Teleflex XTreme cables, here's the ones you need...http://www.boatersland.com/enginesystem ... 3300x.html

The cables moved once I removed them in the shift slide and throttle linkage; they were not frozen and moved pretty smoothly. The problem was the cables were not secured properly. The groove you put them in to hold in place and keeps them latched down, I did not have them put correctly. When I did the trial run they must have come loose so I could not shift down to neutral and reverse, and I was not getting full throttle. Thanks for the help again Seabob!
