New to Me 1979 20 CCP
« on: April 22, 2016, 05:29:18 AM »
The Project Starts!  I just got a 1979 20 CCP. with an eye toward a complete rebuild.  She's had many owners, and each one left some scars.  The boat is rough, but I hope to recapture some of that Aquasport magic.  These pictures don't show how rough she is.  I'll get more up soon.  For some reason, I can't batch upload images, so i have to put them in 1 at a time.

CCP Fuel Tank
« Reply #1 on: April 22, 2016, 07:12:58 AM »
A Previous replaced the fuel tank hatch with a heavy piece of plastic.  It looks like counter top material.  The seat pedestals were the only mechanical connection.

The top of the tank doesn't look too bad.  The tank coffin had about 3 inches of water sitting in it, but no fuel.  Tank dimensions were 72 long x 24 wide(trapezoidal so it's 20 at bottom) x 11 deep.  I estimate it to be around 70 Gal.

The original, I assume, tank lid extends under the console.

Even though the tank doesn't look too bad, I'm expecting the worst when I remove and clean.

Factory lists it at 73 gal (if original).

Water in the coffin is a tombstone. The hatch needs sealing to prevent that. I would be surprised if you don't find corrosion under the straps.

Good luck. :thumright:

Thanks, Captain Bob.  Yeah, I expect that the tank is toast.  In fact based on the condition of some of the repairs, I expected worse.  Previous owners have kept her going, but I don't think that here's even one repair that was done properly.

Other than the coffin cover she doesn't look that rough at all!

The transom is a mystery.  It doesn't flex, but there are many problems.  It has a row of holes on the starboard side that appear to be filled with silicone.  I'm not sure if it will need to be replaced or not.  I'll drill some exploratory holes to get a better idea of the core condition.

There was some accessory(transducer ?) installed here.  PO removed it and painted over the screws.

The Boat has two bow eyes.  It looks like the smaller eye is original and a second eye that is tied to a lifting eye was added later.

It appears that when the backing block at the stem rotted away, a previous owner added a layer of lightweight FG cloth and spray painted it black.

Here's what I found under the coffin box.  There's a large rectangular cutout in addition to the access ports. All of these cuts are unsealed.  Of course, the whole deck near the console is soft.

The boat has the hidden compartment the rear has been cut away for access through the coffin cutout.

A through hull transducer is installed forward of he console.  It seams too far forward to me.  I'll eventually install a tilted element transducer, but i doubt this will be the location.  Looks like I have a hole to fill.

The starboard battery wouldn't fit on the battery tray, so the previous owner left it sitting in a bird's nest of wires in the bilge.

Portside battery installation is more conventional.

The Trim n Tilt pump is mounted in the bait well.

I have big plans for the boat:
Rebuild Transom
Replace Deck
Inspect Stringers and ?
New Fuel Tank (55 Gal should be good with 150 four stroke)
Rebuild Console to include surface for flush-mount electronics
Relocate Batteries to Console
Rebuild and Insulate Coffin Box
Repower I'm thinking 150 Suzuki
Replace the Trailer

Thanks to all the other rebuilds on Classic Aquasport.  Your rebuilds are an inspiration.  I hope that my work is up to your standards.  It's gonna be fun!

Thanks Rick.  Cool drawing.  It looks like the lifting ring was original.  Not sure why someone added that smaller bow eye then.  Oh well.

Looks like you can add "rewire" to your list  ;-)

Good luck - should be a fun project!

Yeah, I should have listed rewire.  I love the way PO used extension cords for some of the wire runs.

My buddy (and a member here) used orange extension cord to rewire his trailer - "No water intrusion". He has the lights up on his guide poles. In this case I think he is onto something - no connections under water.

Yeah, definitely agree that isolating wires from salt water is more important than price when it comes to wiring.

Just a quick update:

I've been stripping hardware and wire.  The console is stripped and ready to remove.  I'm getting ready to pull the outboard.

I remove hardware from the transom, and drilled some exploratory holes.  The core is definitely wet. Plus it offered no resistance to the drill. This is completly expected. I planned on rebuilding the transom.  I love it when a plan comes together.

I have a question for those who have repowered.  Is there any value in a 37 year old outboard?  The PO kept it running, but it's rough.  I'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to sell or not.  If the decision is to scrap it, I can be quicker and dirtier with the removal.

The Hull is nearly stripped.  All mechanicals except the engine have been removed.  The wiring has been pulled.  Console and Coffin Box are out of the boat, and I've ground out the splash well extension.  Tomorrow, I hope to pull the outboard off the transom.  Then the real surgery begins.

I did take a few pre demolition measurements, so if anyone else is contemplating rebuilding a 20 CCP, you can estimate materials.

The deck is 70" wide and 15'5" from anchor locker to stern boxes.  4 sheets of core will do the deck with plenty left for coring the gunnel caps and other stuff.

The front of the console is 85" aft of the anchor locker (excluding lip), and there is 74" from the rear of the console to the stern boxes.

Steering, shift and throttle cables are 15' long.
