1998 215 explorer top speed
« on: July 24, 2022, 10:48:02 AM »
Inherited my best friends/ brother in laws 1998  215 explorer with a 200 HP Johnson. Having issues with full rpm’s and speed. I was previously on the boat many times and remember top speed 35-40 mph. Now can’t get past 29 mph at 5k rpm’s.

Any 215 owners have rpm and top end specs?

Much appreciated. Thanks

I have a 97, 215, and currently have a 150 hp etec.  My cruising speed is 30 mph at around 4000 rpm.  I can get her over 40 mph at 5500 rpm if I'm running her lite. (less than 1/2 tank of fuel, no gear, no passengers etc etc)

Keep in mind the weight on board plays a big part in speed. Full fuel tank vs half, amount of people on board, and gear. Prop pitch will also dictate speed. A lower pitch will pop the boat on plane quickly but you lose top end. This is good for pulling skiers. A higher pitch will give you more top end but she be slower climbing out of the water to get on plane.
