Port bank running .., starboard bank not.
« on: October 16, 2020, 10:41:49 AM »
Yeah. My 1998. 90 hp Evinrude Crossflow spl isn’t running right.Starboard plugs not working , port plugs are. Ohmed my coils and all were just a little out of spec according to my Manuel. 22 year old coils, so replaced. Replaced plug wires. Only one had continuity. Replaced plugs with new champion oem and gapped .035. I’ve got raw gas coming down leg of motor. The hose going to the fuel pump is saturated. New replacement hose just in. Waiting for spark tester and remote trigger for starter to come in directly . Will check spark and then compression once tools arrive. My fear is the lower crank seal is bad. Am I on the right track? Hopefully some of the smart guys will weigh in. Thanks in advance!

Each cylinder bank has it's own power pack, switch them and see if the lack of spark follows the a faulty power pack. Bad lower crank seal would effect one or both bottom plugs but not the top plug also if the seal was bad the engine will spit at idle from part of the fuel charge being lost through the seal and causing a lean condition. Any easy way to check is to pull the gearcase and look for gas/oil running down the driveshaft.

Thanks Fitz . I failed to mention all new coils from marine engine.com. ButI’ll switch those coils from starboard to port, and vice versus to see if issue follows. All coils ohmed out perfect , but can’t wait to switch to rule out coil issues. Thank you Sir.

There’s only one power pack on this model XE90TSLECM( 98 Evinrude 90 hp V-4 Crossflow). I haven’t checked spark yet ( remote starter& spark checker orders) but confident that’s the issue because when I pull the plug wire off.. no difference in idle or running. Both cylinders on starboard bank not firing. Should I get a Peak Volt Meter Or is there an easier method to diagnose? Just trying not to throw parts at it and hope. Thanks for your help Sir.

You are correct sir. Checked your engine on marine engine and it only has one power pack. Look for things that differentiate the two cylinder banks.
I would look for the pin connections for everything related to the dead bank. Two coils don't go bad at the same time but a connection to both of them could be the root cause. I'm a Mercury guy but many times ignition ailments are similar just with different terminology.

Had the issue fixed for a while. Four brand new power pack/ coils from one of the online stores we go to frequently. Not their fault They just sell em’. Two were bad out of the box. Threw up my hands and took it to the marine mechanic in Belleview Fl. He put in two used coils and fixed it. I didn’t check for spark. Figured I didn’t have too with four new parts. Maybe I learned my lesson. I hope so . Next time I’ll try not to assume anything.
