replacing gas tank in 1998 205 osprey
« on: April 05, 2010, 07:12:06 PM »
i need to replace the gas tank in my 1998 205, whcih requires cutting the deck.  my boat mechanic friend who's going to do it won't be able to start until next week.  can anyone tell me the specs (size) for the tank, so i can at least order one now so i'll hopefully have it when he's available?

and, any recommendations on where I can get one and what kind to get?

aluminum or plastic?

I'm suggesting that instead of re-glassing the deck into a solid floor as it is now, that he make it a hatch in case i ever want to get down there again.  any comments pro or con?  any suggestions or ideas for what to do or not do or for the precise method or configuration?

First,
Welcome aboard JS. :salut:

Second.
I don't have a 98 catalog so I can't tell you tank size since they didn't make a (205 Osprey?) in 97( one catalog I have).
I didn't catch where you hang your hat but there are several places that fab aluminum tanks though you may have a poly  (Bob C to the white phone).
Turnaround is fairly quick so I'd remove the old first, just to be sure (size and type).

As far as cutting in a hatch, that's an excellent idea if your guy knows how. :thumleft:

Good luck.

i guess i just assumed it was an osprey, don't remember now why.  it's definitely a 205, and definitely 1998.

i'm in st pete.  i noticed there are several others on here who are in the tampa bay area.

Thanks again. edited my profile.

I'm really happy to find this.

Is there any consensus on aluminum versus plastic?  I'm assuming aluminum.  my friend suggested that, although we didn't discuss it in depth.

And, from skimming the threads it seems many have tanks custom-built.  Are marine gas tanks pretty non-standardized?

RDS makes aluminum tanks and supplied Aquasport with them for years. I just replaced mine in a 91 WAC.
They have the different sizes for different model Aquas. Pretty much standard. Some have them shaped or sized differently (I had mine reduced to half its original length). Most replace the standard for standard.
They're located in Perry Fla. about 4 hrs north of you.

Edit:I researched a poly and would have gone with it but I was afraid of the "fuel smell" that could permeate from the tank. In an open fisherman type craft this is of no concern but could affect one with a cabin. I say could because I believe the 225 EX's come with poly tanks (again Bob C to the white phone) but there doesn't appear to be too much chatter (in this forum anyway) about fuel smell in that model's cabin. We have several members with the 225 so maybe they will chime in. In my case, I didn't want to give my wife any additional reasons (aside from claustrophobia) for not using the cabin.

jskipper,
Welcome, sir!  First some things that may help you.  The 205 Osprey was identical to the Wellcraft 210 CCF, so calling Wellcraft Cust. Serv. should get you the dimensions of the tank.  Here's a link,WellcraftBoats but I'm not sure if the Sarasota number is any good anymore.  That was our phone number back then, maybe it gets connected to Cadillac (the Four Winns plant).

Another thing you can do is, through your inspection hatch, use a tape measure and get a length and width measurement, then, based on the number of gallons the P/N plate states, you can so some backwards math and get the height based on the volume of 1 gallon of fluid.  Remember V=L X W X H.
That tank should be roto-molded polyethelene, and is most likely rectangular in shape.  Frankly, I see no problems with a plastic tank...

thanks.

I tried to call wellcraft yesterday and got nowhere.  no answer, just voice mail etc.  once i realized that aquasport hadn';t been made for a long time i decided it wasn't worth it anyway.  but, i guess ity may be worth another try.

is a plastic tank likely to be cheaper than aluminum, and where would i get one?

JS,
Just got off the phone with Ralph in Cadillac.  Unfortunately, the tank drawings didn't make it up to Michigan with the rest of the WC stuff.  All he could tell me was that tank cap. is 75 gallons, and if it was an aluminum tank, it was a Florida Marine Tanks model, if it was plastic, it was a Moeller.

CB is right on the mark.  I'm betting it's the FT7603-R2.
