Just got my new GPS, while reading the instructions, they suggest mounting the antenna on the bow as opposed to the top of the T-Top.

Has anybody else done this?

Can the antenna cable be spliced?  It is going to be a bear to fish that cable end thru my T-Top.

Mounting the antenna on the T-top would be fine.  No idea why Garmin suggests the bow.  The antenna only needs a clear line of sight to the sky.

It actually says: "The unit provides more stable readings if it is located nearer to water level"

To give you a warm fuzzy feeling about the operation of the antenna on the T-top, why not just temporarily mount it up there with tape or something and see how it works?

I think you would lose more with a spliced cable and extra cable length than you might gain from the bow location.  Put it on the t-top or the top of the console and it will work fine.

I put it on the T-Top...

The rocking of the boat causes erratic readings at slow speeds.  The higher the antenna is mounted, the worse the readings jump.  It's a downside to more accurate and faster calculating units.  They think the boat is jumping from side to side.

A good hand with a soldering iron can replace the connector.  I would not splice it.

I have installed hundreds of GPS antennas on T-Tops and never had a problem.
