Transducer / hull
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:59:07 AM »
Hi All,
I'm going to update my FF/gps and am considering a thur-hull transducer. Any pro/cons to a thur-hull?
Can anyone confirm the hull is solid fiberglass, not cored.
Doing a thur-hull in a cored hull seems like alot more work according to the transducer install instructions.
I currently have a transom mount but the low speed operation isn't very good. (FF about 12 years old) Maybe a new would be better?
I'm looking at the Lowrance HDS7.

Thanks
John

I believe what you are referring to is a "shoot thru the hull" transducer. A thru-hull transducer would require cutting a hole in the bottom of the boat and the transducer would be mounted in the hole. In my opinion the shoot-thru does not work as well as the transom mount or the thru-hull.

John as Fernando said a Thru-hull ducer is mounted in the hull by drilling a hole in the hull.  They typically give you the best signal.  But they are much more expensive and... well you have to cut a big hole in your boat!   If your current transom mount is giving you trouble at low speed I'd say it is not installed correctly and needs to be adjusted.  I just installed a HDS-7 with a transom mount transducer.  I'm waiting for good weather to use it.  You can see my install on my 245 Explorer here:  http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9132&start=15

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I know I need to drill a large hole in the boat.
I don't think it will be a problem if the hull is solid and not cored.
I will check out your install , let me know how it works when you run the boat.

Thanks
