BOW PULPIT AND WINDLASS 215 EXPLORER
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:17:53 AM »
I HAVE AN 2002 215 EXPLORER. WOULD LIKE TO PUT PULPIT AND WINDLESS ON IT. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP PULPIT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE DUE TO MARINA COST PER FOOT. ANY ADVISE OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANKS

Lefty,

Great question, I was going to get around to asking the identical question myself.

I am not to the point where I am ready to purchase, however I am real interested in having some good ideas of what I should get.

I hope we get some input !

I have no idea about a aftermarket pulpit but I did just install a windlass on my 230.  Looks great and took it out 24 miles the other day, but never even turned the breaker on

Here's a Pulpit that was made out of starboard.

It's not a good pic but I don't have boat anymore. It was 2 pieces 3/4" thick thru bolted with the windlass.Looked great.
Good Luck

I take it your marina charges by total length, as opposed to LOA or WL length...

THANKS FOR PIC MARK SR. ,BUT IT LOOKS A LITTLE LONGER THAN I WAS THINKING ABOUT. SEA BOB, YES THEY CHARGE A FLAT $12 PER FOOT. I SAW ON ANOTHER BRAND CC THAT HAD THE WINDLESS MOUNTED TO THE ANCHOR LOCKER HATCH, HATCH WAS BIGGER THAN MINE BUT NOT BY MUCH. DO YOU THINK IF I USED A BACKING PLATE WITH A THIRD HINGE ADDED THIS WOULD WORK?  THANKS AGAIN, AND IF IT WASN'T SO EAARLY,I'D HAVE ANOTHER ONE WITH YOU!

Now that it's warmed up a little, try hitting the Caps Lock button.

As far as the pulpit length goes, I'd guess it would depend on the size anchor you plan on using (clearance/storage in relation to bow) and material strength, ie the ability to overcome the moment that the anchor and rode (when in use and retrieval) will place on the connection point(s) on your bow.

So here's what we're looking at...

I'd suggest a vertical Windlass and a fairlead bolted to the bow peak, should be able to keep your length down to a minimum.  The marina may look at the fairlead a little more favorably than an actual pulpit...

BTW, the "fairlead" is the stainless mechanism that the anchor roller attaches to.  Rick knows this...

You'll also have to ditch the bi-color nav lights for separate port and starboard lights...

Thanks, seabob. That is sort of what i had in mind, You didn't mention about mounting the windless to the anchor hatch. Do you think this will work? Also, what type of anchor do you think would work good with this setup? Thanks again for any and all advice.

Does that really say $12 per foot??? :?

Here in Ct I and many others are stuck paying anywhere from $75-125 a foot... I paid $80 per foot and that was with a 30 minute ride to the opening of the LI Sound!

Tell you what, if you know anyone up this way that can give me a slip for my 25ft'er for $12 p/ft I will send you a check for the extra $24 it will cost you once your windlass is installed!!!

Lefty,
That windlass will exert quite a bit of force on the hatch, but you could do it.  Stout strap hinges on the aft side, t/bolted, a good stout hasp on the fwd side, t/bolted, and the hatch cored with ply or coosa rather then end-grain balsa, 3/4" thick.  Allow slack in the wiring (cables) to be a ble to open the hatch, install a chain tensioner as well as a t/bolted cleat to tie off...

Just some food for thought...

Down here on the Gulf coast, a Fortress anchor is the best, but a Delta may serve you well.  Depends on the bottoms you encounter...

Yes Jaycall, $12.00 per foot for dry storage, Amelia Island,Fernandina Beach, FL. Some marinas in Jax,FL are even lower at $10.00 ft. You must have some really good income to afford $75-$125 per ft.<of course I guess you get 10 foot of snow, no charge.

Capt Bob, does that mean I need to get a new hatch ? or can I modify the one I have?

Cut out the coring (slvrlng, AKA Lewis) is real good at this, you don't want the compression end-grain balsa will exhibit.  I'd go with Coosa...

Calling Lewis...
