Installing new rub-rail insert -- How big a job?
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:02:59 PM »
Next project on my list for my 225 Osprey is replacing the rub rail insert.  Just curious if any of you fellas have tackled this chore.  I think new rubber is all it needs.

How long does it take, how much does it cost, and how big a P.I.T.A. is it?    Do I need a special tool?

Thanks!

Mike,
We made these out of 3/4" starboard, about 4" wide and 15" long.  Heated the insert with a propane torch used for shrink wrap, then lubed with WD-40...

It takes a technique, but once you learn it, you can install your insert in 30 seconds...no chit!

Get it hot in a 200 degree oven, keep a heat gun handy, a couple of slotted screwdrivers, take your time, and she'll go in... :thumright:  :thumright:

I'm guessing I won't match your 30 seconds Bob!

But if I heat up the rubber in the oven, and use a heat gun while working... I don't need that nifty tool you crafted, correct?

I know when I installed my new rub rail I needed to put real rope inside it and it almost killed me.  I took a piece of 3/4" conduit and cut it at a 45, then slid the rope through it and stuck the conduit into the groove on the rub rail.  I used soap and a rubber mallet to work the conduit all the way around the boat - man was that tough.  I had a guy helping me and we took turns beating on the conduit to force it around the boat.  That was with real rope though.

Found this video on Youtube.  Seems SOOO easy....
But hey, at least the narrator is pretty cute.  :flower:

I think this insert they used is the round, tubular type, which unfortunately isn't the type my boat uses.
