Baitwell suggestion

I have the tournament model osprey 200 with the livewell in front of the console but i want a larger one that is portable to go underneath the leaning post. ANyone set up one of those in the 25-30 gallon size? I am trying to figure about running the plumbing. I have a thru hull pickup already but would probably use a different pump and thinking of how to tie into the discharge line that is already plumbed to the front livewell.

ANy thoughts?

Would it be something you would use all the time or just on occasion?  I guess if it were me and I was only gonna use it on occasion I would look at a way to tie it into my other baitwell (supply and drain) to reduce the cost and effort for the install.  If done that way really all you would need would be the baitwell, lines and t-connector for the supply and drain lines not to mention a larger pump that would supply enough water flow for both.  You could leverage the drain from your existing well.  

IMHO it all depends on how much you would use.  On the contrary, if something that would be used often then a more discrete installation may be warranted with a dedicated pumps and drain lines.  

Which camp are you in?

FYI---A friend of mine had a portable setup on the back of his boat for a while.. dedicated pump and barrel for the bait.  Worked well but took up a fair amount of room.  The overflow was rounted to his splashwell where it drained out.  The key there was that it was essentially self contained with the exception of the fill line which was tied into the existing through hull clamshell and the power supply line for the pump which was removable and was stored under the transom when not in use.  Guess what I'm saying is the location made it easy to manage when he needed to use it and of course not.

Sometimes you just need a few minutes to get the solution. Kodiak oval bait well in the 30 gallon range set in FRONT of the console using the line off the existing bait well pump. Maybe a 4" pie plate in the side of console for access. Drain line put into drain line that exists thru the top of the lid over current live well.

You may want to reconsider your first idea, below the leaning post. The baits won't take the beating they do up front, and will be easier to get to...JMHO.

If you go under the leaning post....was your leaning post designed to hold a cooler underneath it?  If so, the cooler can be converted to a lkvewell pretty easily, and will look "natural".  Of course, you will still need to figure out the plumbing.

I'm not trying to take over your thread but I have the 21'ccp and have the livewell on the stern. But I'm trying to figure out how she works.  Its a little scary how its towards the stern and i'm thinking I dont want to fill that up with water back there.  What do you guys think

Agree. Most CCP owners don't use the factory livewell behind the transom gate. Most use an above deck oval poly livewell,  on top of the gate and forward into the cockpit, or set below the leaning post. Easier loading, and keeps the weight forward away from the transom. Especially important in sloppy conditions.

Here are two verisons - the center boat is John Dupree's (Yamaha motor) and he has the livewell up under the leaning rest.  Mine is on the right (Mercury) with the livewell in the back - the boat on the far left is Miss Delmarva - Scott's super-duper-rebuild:


I put my livewell on the spashwell door opening and remove it when I don't need it.  I put the livewell pump in the old, useless baitwell and it pumps up into the livewell.

I had the same debate in my in process 75 222 Rebuild I'm putting it under leaning post. For front lockers I'll run new drain lines to transom and stainless through hull fittings- bait doesn't ride well forward helm. Also  these front boxes will give me storage and possibly a cooler.

It was just a weird design. Darn near impossible to put a cast net on top of....net gets caught in the engine rigging. And the weight position....you'd ship water over the transom in rough conditions.

My 1985 222 CCP kept getting water in the transom livewell despite plugging it from the inside.  I finally figured out that rain water would leak in there (while I had the boat in my driveway) and if water came over the transom, instead of draining out the holes, it would go into the livewell.  Having replaced the old 235 Johnson with a 200 Yamaha 4 stroke, the additional weight that the water put on the transom (in addition to the 150 or so pounds the motor weighed) really weighed down the back of my boat.  Don't really need a livewell for what I use the boat for, so I filled it with hi-bond closed cell polyurethane pour foam. In case you are considering doing the same, I bought 2 quarts from wholesale marine and it wasn't enough.  Wound up having to buy another 2 quarts for a total cost (including shipping) of about $132.00.  I'm sure I could have bought it cheaper if I'd ordered the right quantity or had looked around, but I didn't have time to search.  I'm also sure there are other options, but am happy with the additional flotation I got from doing this.
