Hi all! 1st post: Ye Ole Gastank Filler Hose Problems

1987 Osprey 170 in the Wilmington, NC area here.

So I've searched through all the threads and tried to find some answers. I've seen a few rebuilds and collectively put together a mental image of what the filler hose looks like in the hull area between the filler cap and the gas tank.

I've removed my old tank and had a new one built. Now I'm onto the issue of finding the means to removing the old rotten filler hose & vent hose. I'm a fairly big guy so getting my hands in small places doesn't work too well. Those little access ports next to the filler cap and in the front right floor compartment don't seem to provide much help.

At this point I have the filler cap removed completely and the filler hose pushed aside so I can look straight down through what used to be the filler cap. I see that the filler hose makes a 90 degree turn right under the floor molding and disappears. From the view I have, there is nothing attaching the hose to the hull. However, after some pulling and tugging, I get the feeling that its glued to the hull somewhere underneath with foam or something in that area?

Some options went through my head. I thought about drilling a hole through the few feet of hose sticking out into the area for the fuel tank, and putting a metal pole through it to use as a fulcrum and attempt to "pry" the hose lose. I cannot see into the hull from either end to determine exactly what is making it so stubburn. Drilling a hole in the floor and installing an access cap was a thought to, but thats the last thing I want to do if all else fails. Once I get it loose, I'm going to attach the new hose to one end of the old hose via metal wire and just pull it through.

1.) Is this just one of those things where you have to use a little elbow grease and pry the thing loose?

2.) Any tips on getting the hose out?

3.) Best tips of feeding the new hose in place?

Welcome aboard Nick!  PLENTY of 170 owners here, including the site admin RickK, so, even though I feel your fuel fill hose might just have a tad bit of foam providing the death grip on it, those guys will know for sure...

You saw these pics? That could be what's holding your fill hose in place. Foam flotation.

I'm not sure Craig. You never know That little fuel hose could be the tip of the iceberg  

May need to do some exploratory. Quickest way is with a Stihl.

One way or the other...that old hose is toast

Not real sure if the 170 is like the 19-6 in this regard, if you have the pie hole where the fuel fill, is remove it completely. get a long straight screwdriver and star chiseling the foam out around the hoses down where the liner and floor are.. this will help, but keep in mind, the hoses were put in before the liner and the liner kind of pinches them at the bend, doesn't kink them just puts some pressure on them , the more foam you can remove the better..
Worst case scenario, is that you make a 6"x 6" cutout where the liner and floor meet, 3 inches up the liner, 3 inches out in the floor and remove this piece and the hoses will come out fairly easy..just have to reglass the piece back in, may actually save time...Hope this helps..

I think the 170 will be a tad easier than a 19-6 to get the fuel fill hose out of.  I was looking around in my 170s hull by taking pics...  I could clearly see the fuel fill hose by looking aft from a pie plate located in my starboard storage bin under my casting deck. (I did this with a digital camera.)

OK here we go!  I took this pic when I was fixing my fish box drain.  The fuel fill hose is the big one on the left.  I think it runs straight back into the coffin from there...  So I don't think it is in any foam.



Here is a pic taken inside the fuel fill pie plate looking down toward the chine.  The fuel line is the big hose in the right corner.  The through hull fitting with the clamp on it is the for the fish box drain.

Went over there yesterday, stuck a pipe down through the fuel fill deck hole. Took the pipe and shoved the hose back. Like Bruce was saying, it was pinched between the hull walls and the liner. It loosened up when it was shoved back towards the stern.

Then took a drill, drilled through the fuel hose at the coffin...stuck a metal rod through the hole, gave the hose a few twists...Bam, it was loose.

Nick is picking up the new hose today. Gonna use the old hose to pull the new hose. Old hose was toast....could break it with your hands.

Method used to break the hose lose from the foam.....some twisting and elbow grease. Definitely a tough one-man job. Two people twisting/pulling is really what is needed IMO.
