Bilge pump wire routing
« on: June 06, 2016, 06:11:17 PM »
I have a 1987 Osprey 200 with bad bilge pump wiring (blows fuses) that I am trying to replace. In removing it the splice broke somewhere between the pump and the console.  There seems to be a small hole just aft of the oil container that is maybe 1/4th inch round. In trying to run a fishing wire down and aft it does not seem to go toward the pump. I can't find where the old wires were installed . Is there a channel or trace going aft besides the side trace with all the wires? Really need some advice about this as it is driving me nuts as I spent all morning working on it to no avail. Maybe someone has a photo of the sole out or has had the same problem?
Thanks in advance.

US,

Are you sure it's not in the deck channel running from the console to the stern?

Note line drawing of deck.

That's where mine ran on my 170.

Capt Bob,
I can't find any channel running from console to stern. When I put the fish wire running toward the stern there is only 3 places to access. First is pie plate under console at gas tank hose inlet 2 is pie plate between seat and over gas tank gauge 3 is the little hole I posted about in the oil tank area.  Running a wire aft in all areas I seem to hit a bulkhead going aft. I can;t seem to find an opening through it. Very limited access.

Pardon my confusion.

Is there not an "L" shaped (sort of) screwed down hatch cover running from the right side of the console back to the stern containing the shift and throttle cables, steering cable and wiring harness from the engine?

Yes there is a channel that has a glass top screwed down with all the cables. I have this open but it is not where the bilge pump wiring runs as there is no way to access the bilge from the channel. The channel is sealed all the way down and only has surface wiring and cables to the engine. I even just installed a hatch over the bilge pump and took the 5" pie plate out so I would have better access to the pump. The old cables run forward and are tied to the underside of the floor. I still can't see where they go. There are 3 wires as the old pump was not wired direct to the battery.

I had an 86 170.  It had a similar trough to the 196.  The bilge pump wires ran through the trough, but there was a small hole on the inboard side of the trough that allowed the wires to pass into the bilge.  Is it possible to reach through the pie eye and trace the wires with your hands?

I just pulled the channel cover from an 88 Osprey 200.  Bilge wires go into the bilge through a hole on the inboard side, underneath the rear stride quarter of the console. The must run along a stringer, and then to the center aft where the pump is mounted. I know I'm a year late, but hope this helps somebody.

1988 bilge wiring is kind of nasty in the Osprey 200 CC. Am considering drilling out the wiring hole at front inner channel where present 3 wires come to the console, making that hole a tad larger and running a pre-made single 3 wire bilge wire aft to the pump location.  Do I care that the new wire would sag--I can't fasten it to the bottom of the deck? Will the new wire run ok with a snake, or will there be obstructions not visible or knowable?  Thanks for any comments.
