Re-power for 1983 25XF WITH OLD jOHNSON 225
« on: June 16, 2015, 12:17:23 PM »
We have a great 25XF with an older Johnson 225 hp 2-stroke. Compared to the 4-strokes she is loud. The boss wants a quieter engine. The four strokes are heavier. Do any of you have insight on a new engine for our boat? Are the Hondas best? Are Suzukis/Yamahas faster? Do the Mercurys have better hardware as in stainless steel, etc;? Is one brand more fuel efficient? By the way the 1989 Johnson still runs great. Considering the differences, advantages, trade-offs, might you give us your thoughts.     Gary and Sue
Maine25XF. Late to the gate we love our boat. Others are humbled by the Sally-Carol. We treat her like family, only better! If you have any tips, insights, or positions on the health benefits of two-stroke exhaust,  please opine and inform. Gary

Definitely gt a yamaha,  I just bought a 350 four stroke.  Haven't rigged it yet but it should do great.  Yamahas are better engines hands down,,,, I've owned them all, trust me!

My 08 115 Suzuki is called the electric motor at the marina.  lol  I love it.  And it sips fuel. Probably half what that old 2 stroke uses.

I re-powered an old 240 with a new four stroke (Yamaha F250).

The added weight can be problematic for an older boat (See my post->http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=13856.0)

Basically, I have more water coming in through the drain valves because of the new motor.

I'd look for the lightest motor you can find. Problem is most of the four stroke motors are too heavy. The Hondas are very heavy, Suzuki is probably next heaviest. The lightest your gonna find in that hp range is a Etec 3.3l G1. If you were closer I have a 2005 Etec that's going up for sale soon.
