2000 Aquasport 175 repower question

Hi All,
My name is Carlos and I am new to the site. I am helping my very senior dad re-power his 175 osprey which came with a 115 Johnson. My best guess is that motor weighs in at 319 lbs. The used market is hit or miss with these old motors. However, I came across a very clean Yamaha 130 HP V4 2 stroke. I believe this motors weighs in at 359 lbs. Is this too much weight for this hull? I know that it's max rated for 120 HP as well but I don't think the extra 10 HP will make a difference. Could be wrong though. Thanks in advance for your input.

It's no so much the extra ponies but rather the extra lbs.
Most worry about the extra weight in the stern that can result in self bailing failures at rest with people fishing/congregating in the stern. There are ways around it but keeping the weight down is what you're trying to accomplish.
Good luck.

The extra weight was my initial concern. It seems that most 90 to 115 HP four strokes are weighing in around 350 lbs. I also believe the old Yamaha 115 two stoke is also at the 350 lb range. I may be limited to an older 90 Hp Yamaha two stoke or another Johnson/Evinrude

Those V4s are pretty heavy. Inline 3s are generally almost 100 pounds lighter and performance is still strong on a 170/175 if you're in the 85/90hp range. Not going to win any races but if 35mph is good enough for you, it's a good way to go.

Took a glance at the 2000 brochure found here in the gallery. It was offered with both the Yamaha 115 and Merc 115. Both are right around 350 lbs. Same as the 130 HP. Problem is, I won't hear the end of it if he is fishing with wet feet. Its tough to fine a clean (used) Yamaha 90 in South Florida. If you do, they want a premium price for it.

Are you set on Yamaha?
Some of the other manufacturers made great two strokes into the the 2000s. Suzukis are very light weight and a great motor IMHO. My DT85 is 270 lbs and they made that until 2002 I think.
Nothing wrong with the newer Evinrude 2 strokes and etecs either, and that would (probably) prevent you from having to buy new controls.
All personal preference, but there are good options out there.

Proper scuppers or expanding plugs in the deck drain will keep his tooties dry. I had a 115 on my 170. Fishing in back at times pushed the drains down but the flapper type scupper kept the water out. The deal with that type is keeping the rubber supple and the drains clear of debris (think trash and weed). Other members have used the "ping pong ball" type with good results. Lastly, by inserting the expanding plug in the drain (inside the hull) you block the water very well but should it rain, you will of course trap water on the deck. Once underway, you remove the plugs and the deck self bails.
Lots of ways to skin this cat.
Good luck.

The 115 and 130 weigh the same.
A 3 cylinder will push the boat well.
WHAT I DID was plug one scupper and add a1100 GPH auto bilge pump to the sump area. I'd take a wave, and that pump would spit it out instantly. In fact, I'm searching for that exact pump again. Made by SeaDog, it had a magnetic switch. It was awesome.
Get the best motor you can. I loved my 3-cyl Merc on my 170, and I don't really like Mercury.

Thanks for the info and sorry for the slow response. I had a rough week at work last week. What prop and pitch size do you recommend for the 115/130 configuration?
