Model Designators
« on: June 21, 2018, 12:10:31 AM »
Positions 4 and 5 of an Aquasport hull number are supposed to be the "model designator".
Can anyone provide the list of valid model designators and what they stand for ? and
specifically what a "BU" model designator means ??
Thanks in advance ...

p.s. The first 3 letters of the hull number are "AQU" if it matters ...

I did a quick review of HID #s listed in the registry threads, and came up with the following:

196 Osprey E0
200 CCP P0
222 CCP A0

There does not seem to be any use of the codes that “stand for”  anything.  Maybe a thorough review of HIDs would you’ll more info and maybe a pattern.  What model is your BU?

Welcome robo!  Are you trying to ID your model? Post a pic and we'll help.

We tried to decipher that code a number of years ago and as ms stated, there was some correlation between the two letter sequence but just when we thought we were on to something, an oddball would pop up. HINs are pretty reliable for year of build but often extra stock would be used the following model year. A hull build in late 84 may have ended up being sold in 85.

Rick is correct in that we pretty much have seen the Aquasport model line for both the Hialeah and Genmar built hulls so a pic is the best way to identify the exact model.

What year is your hull?

My 1998 245 Explorer HIN starts with AQA.

I know for a fact the Genmar built boats hulls for "stock" and kept them in the yard wrapped in shrink wrap.  If they sold them in following year they would change the HIN to reflect when it was actually sold.

My 1998 245 Explorer HIN starts with AQA

As does mine and Rick's. The AQA appears to list Genmar as the manufacturer.

AQ seems to be the Hialeah hulls up to about 87 +/-.

AQU might be models built in Hialeah after the first restructuring of the Company.

There was a QU reported as a 1990 CCP.  90 models have always eluded me as far as catalogs go and info of any kind in general. 1990 was the model year when the changeover to Genmar seemed to occur. 91 and beyond carry the AQA code (as above). QU might possibly be a misread on the member's part and really be AQU. :thumright:

Please show us a pic and HIN #.

Thanks.

This much I "know":
o My boat was made by Aquasport
o It was made in the year 2000 - model year the same (according to HIN)
o It appears to be an Osprey model
 Now for my confusion ...
o It appears to be an Osprey Sport but it does not say "Osprey" or "Sport" on the side as I have seen
in other pictures of Osprey Sports
o It has a "Tournament Master" emblem on the side (which I'm told is sort of like a "trim level" on a car ???)
o I'm not sure what the difference between a "Tournament Master" and a plain "Sport" model of the Osprey
is so I can't verify that it is one or the other.

I'm GUESSING that you would call this thing a "2000 Aquasport Osprey Sport Tournament Master" but I'm
not sure what the part after "Osprey" really implies .....

p.s. I bought it from M&M Boat Sales in Middle River, MD and the pictures are still on their web site (mmboats.com)

That's a dual console (DC), aka, bow rider or walk through. Models made in Hialeah were based on the CCP hull and known as Sandpipers. You are correct, they called them Sport in 2000 rather than DC. It is a Genmar hull, made in Bradenton Fla. at their Wellcraft plant.

The decals may have been removed (not uncommon, I did it on my 86). Tournament Master got you additional items like you suspect. Look at #22 or #23. Also note there are other options that may pertain to your model (value packages 6, 7, 8 & 9 for the 215 OS)

Looking at the M & M video, you look to have the TM package #1 and Value Packages A & B. :ScrChin:

I'm just guessing but you'll be able to sort it out.

Nice looking boat. Enjoy. :thumright:
