What to Do - Not a Good Day

Just finished wrapping up my project last year (1986 osprey 22-2) along with a new tandem axle trailer. I was coming home late the other evening and i am pretty sure the motor went boom. She is locked (2000 Johnson 130). I haven't had any issues with this motor, always flushed it and she ran great. The oil tank has been consuming oil so i dont think the injection pump is bad. I am now stuck with deciding if i should spend the 12-15k to repower, find a used motor or part with the hull and find another boat. I have a hard time putting that much more money into a 30 year hull.....

First thing I would do is pull the heads.  This will give you a good indication of what is going on with your motor.

Before you pull the heads, check the gearcase and make sure it didn't lock up. I would be full of water and metal chips or burnt gear oil. I have seen blown gearcases stop a motor in its tracks and make you think the powerhead let go.

Got the call today. Cylinder #1 piston has a hole in it. Mechanic says oil starvation so i am guessing my pump went up. Thinking about repowering with a Zuke 150. Has anyone gone this route/concerns with weight. I think the new Suzuki weighs around 500lbs, but the boat was rated for a 225 max.

Sorry about your motor.  If the pump malfunctioned I would assume you would get some kind of alarm, and the damage to the motor would be more widespread than 1 cylinder.  Sounds like to me that cylinder leaned out for some reason and was not getting gas/oil.

I agree. A failed oil pump would destroy ALL the cylinders. Odds are that carb was clogged and went lean.... lean of fuel and oil... got hot and melted a hole in the piston. If that motor is carbureted then it has OMS (Oil Metering System) which is very reliable.  I'd look for a used 150 Etec. Direct bolt on and lightweight. Or new one with a 8 year warranty.  Also the Mercury 3.0L 150HP inline four cylinder is a solid proven motor that is rather lighteight for a four stroke.

Decided on the zuke 150. The transom is in decent condition with no signs of cracking/hairlines. I called down to the guys at outboard specialties in FL and they have done a decent amount of 22-2 with this motor. I was a little skeptical going to a 500lb motor but the mechanic at the boat shop seems to think it will be fine. Any other guys out there running a DF150 on a 22-2?

I have a Yamaha F150 on my 222 CCP and it is just fine. Though I did move the batteries from the stern (always hated that spot) forward to inside the console.
