In floor fish box converted to livewell
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:14:08 PM »
Has anyone ever thought about or done this before. I know it wouldn’t be easy to do but it think turning them into a livewell tank. I’ve seen striper fish tubes and they just pump water over the fish to keep it alive. I figured the same couple be done to the fish boxes as well.

For what model and year AS?  The 170-175 models the middle bow compartment is too short in height to allow bait to swim freely.  Plus its corners aren't rounded.  Perhaps the 22-2 has a deeper bow compartment.   But even so, the smaller above deck livewells you'll see are 13-15 gallons.  Aside from the added cumulative weight of the bait fish, thats 100+ lbs of water weight slooshing around.

It’s a 1992 250 Explorer. I would use them to hold fish. Stripers and redfish can sit still and just have water flowing over the mouths and still live. My baitwells are in the transom.

Yours is the rarer Delta Conic hull model. Splashing probably would not be a problem but I can't recall seeing a thread where someone actually did this and certainly not on the 250 since we rarely see them at all on this Forum.

Sounds like an interesting plumbing project. May have to punch a couple of holes in the hull for a dedicated pick up and overboard drain but the last probably already exist. :ScrChin:

Good luck. :thumright:

What’s a delta conic hull? This is my first AS.  I already have to replace the wood in the floor so doing the plumbing would not be a issue. I think it would serve a better purpose as livewell a than the ice box that doesn’t hold ice very well.

Since you're replacing the wood in the sole, you have the option of changing the dimensions/shape of the box, either to make it hold ice better, or to make it function better as a live well.  As I recall, the box isn't very deep.

I don’t think you can make them deeper because they are almost touching the hull. The most fish I would have would be 1 in each box. Trying not to add more junk to the floor space just to keep fish alive during a tournament

Capt. Bob, what was the stuff used to fill the void between the floor on the boat. It looks like cake batter that has hardened. Does not look like expand foam. ?  I tried to post a pic but says my file is to big.

First, read this.
https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0

I recommend you (and all members) use the Forum's Photo Gallery especially with the debacle that is now Photo Bucket. File size is not a problem with our Gallery and it will auto size to fit in your post. It works extremely well.

Second, if you are speaking of the "putty" used to attached the sole (deck) to the stringers it is just that. Some bonding material used on all our hulls (and probably most all boats of our type I'd guess). It will take a little extra effort to remove.

Good luck. :thumright:
