Possible deck storage on 200 CCP?
« on: May 14, 2008, 11:57:08 AM »
Need to find out what this is :?   These 2 pictures are taken from the access hatch by the coffin box drain directly under the coffin box toward the bow.  I know on the 222 CCP that there is a storage locker that sits in front of the coffin box on the deck.  This glassed in "thing" appears to be located where the coffin box ends.  Could this possibly be a storage locker that was built in with the cap but the deck never cut.  It does look rounded toward the bottom.

I have noticed that right where the coffin box ends, the deck has a "hollow feel" to it and then firms right back up as you get close to the anchor locker or even go back under the coffin box.

That would be great if infact that is storage like on the 222 CCP :D

Stowage
Looks like the molded-in underdeck stowage.  Does your boat not have the hatch in front of the coffin?

If not, get a hatch - the IPS 13x23 works great - get out the sawzall and start cuttin'!

Bluewater Marine has a great deal on the IPS deck hatch for $45:

Oh, and don't forget to put a drain and plug in the back center...
Good luck!

I have never seen the hatch there on any 20' CCP's :?   That is what it looks like to me as well.  But why would they mold it in with the cap and never cut a hatch in the deck :?

I hope I don't start cutting to find that is not the storage, but it looks like to me something is there.  I guess the key will be finding the right area in the deck to cut.  That will be great if that is the starage locker.  That will give me additional storage.

I have an '85 200 CCP.  If you'd like to make a comparison, I will check the same location on my boat tomorrow and get back to you.  I just had a few helpers over the house minutes ago to help lift a leaning post and the coffin box aboard (it was out when I bought it).  The coffin box has not been bolted down yet so I can take a look see and get back to the post.

Ditto on the storage box.
I have the same thing on my 222. I replaced the factory hatch lid with an after market one. I stow the life jackets there.

Maybe they put those in all the CCPs but the hatch was an option on the 200s  :?

This is your lucky day!  You seem to have some bonus storage on that 200.  I took pics of my boat through the access port forward of the console which is underneath the fish box.  I can see clear up to the bulkhead of the anchor locker.  No fiberglass tub "thing" on the '85 200 CCP that I own.  I've been thinking that there could be a use for all that empty space down there.  If I could get a hatch big enough, I could fit one or both of my skinny young sons down there!  I'll post pics this evening after work during happy hour!

Thanks for letting me know that.  Maybe when they built the cap they thought it was going on the 222 CCP :D   That is very interesting :!: I wonder if that might have been a factory option for my year boat :?:

Anyway, can't wait to get the hatch so I can start cutting

Remember!

Remember - measure twice, cut once!

Also, you will probably find that part of your deck is plywood cored.  Yes, I know Aquasport said CCPs had composite decks, but the bow area is often plywood cored, and the whole deck is plywood on some CCPs.  That's why the front area goes first, especially if you have the hatch there, cuz Aquasport did not seal the wood edges for the hatch.

So make sure you mix up some epoxy/resin and seal the hatch edges after you cut the deck and fit the hatch.  Let it cure well and then use some 5200 to seal the hatch to the deck.  That should prevent water intrusion into the deck wood and prevent delamination or rot of the plywood core.

Here's a pic of mine with the hatch out - I epoxied the edges and screw holes:

Also, remember to drill and fit a drain plug in the center rear - you want to be able to drain this if needed.  You can simply drill a hole and use a rubber drain plug, install a thimble/plug, or put a garboard drain and plug in - whatever works!

Good luck!

Thanks :!:   Looks like you had to cut :?:   Did you go with a bigger hatch :?: As far as the hatch goes, does it have a template to tape down for the cut :?:

Also, will a jig saw go thru that deck :?:

Cut
The IPS hatch was just a bit bigger than the orgininal, so I had to sand the edges a bit to make it fit.   After sanding, I made sure it fit and then sealed/epoxied the edges and screw holes.

The hatch should come with a template you can tape down to the deck. You can use a jig saw - try a finer tooth blade and you will get less fiberglass breakage and a better edge.  Also, cut a smaller hole first - maybe the size of a 6" deck plate and look inside before you make the big cut - you want to be sure!

Also, if you use the IPS hatch and want it to open toward the bow, you will need to loosen the coffin to be able to get the screws in.  The coffin can stay in place if you want the hatch to open toward the stern.  The hatch has to be almost fully open in order to put the mounting screws in.

Thanks GF    I Plan to make the circular deck plate cut first just to check and make sure, but that has to be the storage compartment.  If not, can't wait to see what it is :D

Sorry I'm a little late in the evening with the photos.  Happy hour went overtime.

John, can we see some photos of the hatch install when it happens.  I'd like to get the length, width, depth dimensions of that stock tub AS put into the 200.
