Title: 1990 17.5 compartment questions
Post by: hudsport on October 10, 2018, 04:30:28 PM
two questions if you all could help me on. sorry for the sideways pictures Ill get better!! LOL

(1)the small hatch is this the bow anchor compartment doesn't seem appropriate place to put one seems too small for anchor and chain, also want to find factory hatch, or make one from starboard?
(2)the larger compartment seems like it should have some kind of liner ( tub)? the bottom is exposed and not protected, this normal?

thanks David

Is there a bottom in the front hatch or is it open to the hull and if you dropped anything in there it would end up in the second hatch area or even worse, under the fuel tank cradle? On my rebuild I added a tray in that forward cubby and made sure it had no way someone would lose anything if they put it in there (like a wallet, etc).
It does seem you're missing a tub in the second one - wouldn't be too hard to make one.
We have a couple rebuild examples where they built a mold to hang an anchor in the forward cap - unfortunately the 170/175 (at least mine) doesn't have a lot of room on the forward cap nor under for the shank of the anchor.

ok thanks Rick, yeah your right the front anchor compartment does have a large hole in bottom so even you could fit a shank anchor the chain and line would fall into the lower compartment. weird

I think the better idea is to build one yourself. It's not hard to make a mold.  You can build a mold that looks like the locker you want, looking at it from in the boat or you can build the mold inside out.  Either way, it's not as hard as you think it will be.  We're here to help you and there are a lot of threads that illustrate the process.

Do you have basic carpentry skills and can make things out of wood? If so, you could make it out of luan paneling, get it the way you want and then cover it in glass on one side.  Then remove the wood (even if you have to destroy the wood) and scruff the side that was on the wood with 80 grit sandpaper and then laminate a layer of cloth on that side.  Now drop in it the opening and see how it fits. You can repeat lam'ing on the glass on each side or only one side to thicken it up.

That's cool - he'll probably know about making molds for one-offs. Using Melamine and Formica is also popular for the "release", so you don't have to destroy the mold. You can also get some high density foam and "whittle it"/"sculpt it" into the shape of what you need and then drape cloth over it and wet it out (I'm sure I'm missing a step here ;-) )....If he is in the industry, he'll know or have watched it being done.

David,

Replaced the same front hatch with 1/2" starboard.  Not sure if the middle hatch was an add on or not. Just purchased a new hatch cover with a drop in bin for that location. The bigger hatch I believe is advertised as the fish box. Don't have much use for that one since when it comes to fishing if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all.

since that larger compartment if you open the hatch you see directly to the bottom of the boat so using for storage of anything sharp or hard or heavy would be a bad idea IMO, is there supposed to be a liner or insert you think?

I added a hatch in the front of my casting deck while I was rebuilding.  Yes, the opening goes straight to the hull.  I bought a big "dip net" made to my specifications and using round bar I mounted the netting to the underside of the deck right under the opening. I installed that so I could put soft stuff in the net, like life preservers, jackets, etc. This frees up some space in the main storage spot I have in the casting deck.
