Title: Finally did it... 1985 222 refit...
Post by: Flapilot on February 28, 2018, 07:05:13 AM
Well after going back and forth for a few months I finally pulled the trigger on a 222.

A local marina started the rebuild on this boat and never finished it.  Basically they did all the fiberglass work, which is great because that’s the part I was really unsure of.  He said the prices new boat builders are selling for has hurt the market for these refurbished classics.  I bought the boat for less than they have quoted the fiberglass work alone on my friends boat, and it came with center console, livewell, porta bracket, rod holders, lights, thruhulls, fuel lines....  I hope I got a good deal, I think I did.

Stringers are reglassed with new foam, nidacore deck, panga style console.  The transom was already done with marine grade ply but is 100% solid.  I forgot to take some decent pictures yesterday but here’s what I have.

So obviously first order of business is a trailer and then bringing her home.

Plan is to rig her up with a Suzuki 175 or 200 if I can find a good deal.

Livewell leanpost, trim tabs, garmin and go.  Going to be a minimal features fishing boat.  Throw some bean bags in when the wife and daughter come along.

Over the years, many members have purchased wire from here:

https://www.genuinedealz.com/

You should shop the internet for the best price/shipping cost/tax because tinned copper will get pricey.

They also carry an assortment of switches/breakers/connectors you may require.

You can get some ideas on your project by browsing the Electrical Forum here. Members have done just about anything you may come across on your project.

https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?board=46.0

Good luck. :thumright:

I buy mine from Greg - competitive pricing, very quick shipping and a personal thank you note from Greg in every shipment.

Thank you

Next question for anyone who’s reading.  How did you run your hydraulic lines through your transom?

Do a search on dirtwheelsfl and look at the work he's done on the boats that have porta brackets. I think you have to buy fittings that go through the transom and then hook your hoses to them.

They sell a bulkhead fitting for the hydro lines that looks nice if you wanted to go that route.

I try to eliminate as many fittings as possible on systems so i prefer to do something like this where you have a continuous piece of hydro hose...

https://scanstrut.com/products-22/electrical-accessories/ds40-s-deck-seals-stainless-steel-detail

They make one with a blank rubber insert so you can drill your own holes in it.

It came with this console.  It is the panga marine "Guide without seat".  It happens to be the same console florida196 has on his rebuild.  Im not very original so Im pretty much just going to copy his console layout.  This console is pretty small and it should be a pretty good challenge to make all the electronics and wiring fit but it leaves a ton of room for fishing.  So its a give take that I like.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/F93059E4-CB92-4762-9B66-55973712D4DF_zpsoi0ttfef.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/F93059E4-CB92-4762-9B66-55973712D4DF_zpsoi0ttfef.jpeg.html)

Started with the Garmin 94sv.  Really has to be mounted on that side or the steering wheel is in the way.  Small console.

So I managed to get those 3 mounted and the steering wheel wrapped with paracord.  Im still waiting for all the wiring components to come in.  Ive got a pretty good pile going in the garage as things trickle in from different retailers.

Below is the macro electrical more or less.  Few things may change here or there.  Its going to be a a tight fit under the console.  I did buy some polypropylene window siding today.  Im trying to plan out the layout under the console before I epoxy it the inside.  Then I will mount all the components under there.  I guess the best solution is to mount everything to either side.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/45FD9598-BED4-4056-89C1-599A59164899_zpsrf7x2kgn.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/45FD9598-BED4-4056-89C1-599A59164899_zpsrf7x2kgn.jpeg.html)

going to head down to Marine surplus in Bradenton tomorrow and look for  a front hatch.  The front of the console is 24x24 so I will probably be looking for 20x20ish.  I would like a door that completely comes free and doesnt hinge unless you guys have other ideas.

Google photobucket fix and download the plugin. Makes the site readable again.

If not private message me and I will send you pictures of mine and florida196’s console. I’m copying his.

I wasn’t able to find the right access door at marine surplus. Any idea on where to find a good one?

The space is 24x24 so probably somewhere in the 20x20 - 22x22 range.

Boat Outfitters can custom build doors out of Starboard or Acrylic in a range of colors.  They do good work, not cheap, but definitely good.

On this picture, is the hatch cover hinged?  Is this the underside of the hatch showing? I am not sure how it seals....have you tried running water on the deck with the hatch closed to see if water gets in the bilge?

Yes that’s the underside of the hatch so I see what your saying.

The boat is still at the boat yard awaiting trailer(hopefully this week) so I haven’t poured any water on it. Can I buy a seal for it?

getting ready to start the console wiring tomorrow.  I need to epoxy these pvc window trim boards to the console.  How much epoxy do I need? Do I need to cover the entire back?

Someone told me to just use pvc plumbing glue.  Can I do that?

You can buy rubber seal for the hatch.  Do you know who did the rebuild? If so, ask them what their plan was for sealing the hatch.
As for the PVC trim - can you post pics of what you're talking about?

Are you glueing PVC pads inside the console to mount terminal blocks and run wires?  Are you going to use pre-mixed epoxy glue? Or are you useing epoxy resin?  If the latter, you’ll need silica (cabosil) to thicken the epoxy to keep it from running out.  The exact quantity will vary based on the size of your pads and the texture of the inside of your console.  Pictures would answer a lot of these questions.

Correct. Bought some PVC window trim from Home Depot. Going to cut it up and glue it to the inside of the console. I’ll see if I can grab some pictures in a bit. Pieces are like 24”x2”.

Guess I could probably just use 5200.

You can buy the 2 part 5 min epoxy from HD. I think I would cut some 45 degree supports (from left over trim) and glue them onto the trim first and then glue the trim to where you want. Mix enough epoxy to get good edge coverage, slop it on and place where you want it. Hold it for 5 mins and you're done.

I ended up using some bondo fiberglass which I realize now was probably the wrong Bondo glass but it seems to have worked.  I slathered it on thick with the hardner and held it in place with some landscaping pavers for 10-15 mins and its stuck good.  I cant budge it at all.

Got a bit of the wiring done today.  This is my first time doing this so be easy.  Took me several hours just to get this bit done and the switch panel wired to the terminal.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/9A5CF3A7-A14B-41DA-92A9-C2F844E95F1E_zpsc2yvv0iu.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/9A5CF3A7-A14B-41DA-92A9-C2F844E95F1E_zpsc2yvv0iu.jpeg.html)

I used bigger wire than needed just because I had purchased remnants at Marine Surplus so I had extra.  No harm in going bigger, so why not.  Hopefully get the fuse panel to the GPS, Radio and Trim switch tomorrow.

The GPS and radio both have these built in fuses...

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/B1719687-0F99-479B-B7EE-27398AC71C9F_zpsfz4ffbmm.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/B1719687-0F99-479B-B7EE-27398AC71C9F_zpsfz4ffbmm.jpeg.html)

and the cords are incredibly long.  If I cut the cords is there any reason I cant cut out the fuse since they are being run through the fuse block?

P.S.
Sea Star hydraulic kit came in the mail today too!

First, the wiring looks very good. :thumright:

As for cutting the fuse...when you state "run through the fuse block" do you mean wired to a dedicated fuse or attached to the positive wiring block shown in your pics? Remember, the fuse's function is to protect the wire leading to the device. That's why it should be placed as close to the power source as possible (and why it is on the end of the factory wire). If you are planning to connect to the positive buss then you may wish to leave the fuse since the supply wire is a higher gauge and failure would then occur on the lower gauge wire of the device which might result in a fire condition. :ScrChin:

Good luck.

I’m wiring the GPS through the fuse block.  So if I cut the inline off and then use a 3 amp fuse in the block, which is the same as the inline, then the circuit is still protected right?

Perfect!  Off they come then.

I read some reviews about these self adhesive zip tie mounts.  Most the of complaints were that the adhesive would fail after a couple months.  I bought some and pulled the adhesive pads off.  I used some 2 part epoxy on the back and stuck them to the console. The first couple I put to much epoxy on and it oozed through the zip tie holes.  I used a Qtip on the others and it worked much better.  I tried 10 so far and once they cure if they are solid I will go crazy with them and put them everywhere.

The helm is taller than I thought it would be. It looks a little weird but actually it is perfectly at my height.  I bought it on ebay from a private seller so Im stuck with it I guess.

So far so good. 4 hourish in and I took the tape off.  Tried to twist them off and couldn’t budge them.  I probably could’ve used a quicker set epoxy but this is what I had. I’m going to the store to get more of them tomorrow.  I’m going to mount them EVERYWHERE.  Should make the wiring a bit easier.

Mommy is out of town for 4 days but I stayed up late and made some stuff happen.  Mounted the helm porta bracket switch and pretty much finished the console wiring.  Just needs some batteries and wire run in the rigging tubes once I get the boat home.

Trailer comes home tomorrow but I probably wont have time to get the boat until monday  :(

Picked up the trailer the other day.  Owens and Sons does quality work.

Picked up the boat from the yard and brought it home.

This morning I got the trim tabs and the garmin transducer mounted.

The initial plan was to take the trim tab wires through the mount, but I have and open transom inside the boat and I didnt want a ton of wires running on the inside wall.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/FCD28E8A-B48C-4FE5-8612-F0AE6F650C18_zpskfl19keu.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/FCD28E8A-B48C-4FE5-8612-F0AE6F650C18_zpskfl19keu.jpeg.html)

So I will take them up the back of the transom like I did the transducer cable and in under the aft lip.

You can't see it in the pictures but the equipment boxes dont go all the way to the top so there is room to route the cables under the lip and through the top of the box and into the rigging tubes.  I guess it comes down to whether or not I want the outside of the transom to look clean or the inside.  I would rather the inside I think.  I get some cable clams for the tab wires on the outside of the transom and route them through.

I do have one question.  The transom wasnt replaced.  It was just patched on the outside and painted over.  They left these 3/4" holes on the inside and I dont think I will be using these holes again.  What is the proper way to fill them?

Looks good on the trailer.
As far as the transom goes - have you considered figuring out a way to put some doors over the inside? You'll have a fuel filter and other things back there and need a place to hide them. Just thinking aloud.

That would be ideal and I love those builds however this is what Im stuck with for now.

Is this a bilge pump mounting pad by any chance?  If not where is the proper location for these pumps?

Also I was planning 2 bilge pumps but there is only 1 discharge line(I know there is 2 in the picture but one of them is just a pass through for wires).  I understand It wouldnt be enough tube to run both at the same time, but is there a problem with putting a T in the line so I atleast have a backup pump?

The problem with a T is that at least some of the water you want out of the boat will be flowing back down through your second pump into the bilge.  If you have two pumps, you really need two through hulls.

Duh!  I’m an idiot.

Thanks.
Looks like I’ll try and figure out how to put another one in. Now I just need to figure out how the previous owner was getting power to the bilge.

You could drill a little hole and see what the pad is made of.

You can use one for a raw water wash down and the other for a baitwell.

OK then, which two are raw water and what's the third? I see two valve handles and what appears as a threaded fitting (nipple) with the long black hose touching it. :think1:

let me see if these pictures are oriented right this time and it makes more sense.  This is me in the boat looking in the bilge facing aft.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/C80DF42F-8F46-458E-9B5C-500FD52BBA05_zpshboou0uk.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/C80DF42F-8F46-458E-9B5C-500FD52BBA05_zpshboou0uk.jpeg.html)

So on the bottom there you can see the two raw water pickups.  I already mounted the livewell pump on the one on the right.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/4F4430CA-4874-4910-AED6-B9AED3155632_zpseocuv4tk.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/4F4430CA-4874-4910-AED6-B9AED3155632_zpseocuv4tk.jpeg.html)

Behind the livewell pump is the fitting I think you are talking about.  That is the livewell drain.  It goes through the transom aft and out.

Now these next few pictures are where im stuck.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/B502597E-848F-4D41-B960-122769C20B23_zpssasrcjvn.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/B502597E-848F-4D41-B960-122769C20B23_zpssasrcjvn.jpeg.html)

These two black hoses run through the stringer.  The one on the bottom run through the starboard stringer, into the starboard aft equipment box, to a through hull on the starboard side.  So naturally it is a bilge pump exhaust.

The top one also runs through the stringer, and into the aft equipment box and just terminates.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/A00AE9CF-5576-4A52-83F1-9FB5FA0493E1_zps2jhbogi5.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/A00AE9CF-5576-4A52-83F1-9FB5FA0493E1_zps2jhbogi5.jpeg.html)

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/C1F26FB3-C91D-4F96-9818-FABDC4EE18C0_zpssuiaqhie.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/C1F26FB3-C91D-4F96-9818-FABDC4EE18C0_zpssuiaqhie.jpeg.html)

I had assumed that this was there plan to run wires to the bilge since the rigging tubes from the console come up in the aft boxes and I cant figure out another way to get power to the bilge.  However there is no other thruhull for a second bilge.  So im not sure if they were only planning on running with one pump or what.  But now I need To use this tube as my second bilge pump to the new thruhull Im going to have to install.

1)  So my big questions here......  The top tube is just thru the stringer.  I dont think it is in a piece of PVC that was fiber glassed into the stringer as far as I can tell.  It appears to just be in there.  Does that make sense.  It is also old an deteriorated.  If I pull it out and run a new tube through the same holes I would need to seal it with some new epoxy correct.  Does anyone see any problems arising if I do this?

2)  Second question is can I Drill a new hole through the stringer for a wiring trough from the aft equipment box to the bilge?  Or will I be compromising the stringers?

3)  I also just found this tube. on the port stringer.  It runs forward under the fuel coffin and disappears.

I cant see where it ends.  Any guesses?

I figured out the bilge situation today.  Pictures tomorrow.

In the mean time does anyone know what size hydraulic hose Bobs jack plate uses.  I need to order hose and thruhulls but it seems like the hoses on his site are twice the cost of say sea star steering hoses.  Wondering it there is an alternative?

Ok so I dragged the boat to my cousins house and he helped me work through these hoses and figure everything out.  So much easier with two people.

We ended up pulling the top hose out of the starboard stringer and were able to route some wires through there to the equipment box so that mystery is solved.
The lower hose goes to the thruhull for what will be the automatic bilge pump.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/D2090222-AB40-4B0B-973E-FDEE16029A38_zps5soojqwz.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/D2090222-AB40-4B0B-973E-FDEE16029A38_zps5soojqwz.jpeg.html)

The drain I couldnt figure out actually has a Tee in it.  One side of the T runs forward to drain forward compartments.  The other side just runs straight thru the stringer in to the port side equipment box.  Perfect! so we managed to put another hose through that side and I will drill a new thru hull for the back up bilge pump.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/01D57CEB-A309-42EA-9AEB-A6C2CD0833A9_zpslxc6r3xi.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/01D57CEB-A309-42EA-9AEB-A6C2CD0833A9_zpslxc6r3xi.jpeg.html)

So we found the wire run and make access for a second bilge.  All is right in the world and everything is mounted.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/F3FB3B5E-D137-4267-B25A-28AE63B0836F_zpsltmgsy15.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/F3FB3B5E-D137-4267-B25A-28AE63B0836F_zpsltmgsy15.jpeg.html)

All is right in the world except....  I picked up the livewell that came with the boat.  It is supposed to be a dorado livewell.  Its not like they stamp these things though but it seems legit.  The only problem is its a bit short.  Its perfect to sit on, however I would like to be able to lean against it as I like to steer standing up.  So im in the market for a taller live well.  This one is only about 23.5" tall.  I have a call in to Eugene.  He said he would get back to me monday.  I have some other calls out as well.  So im in a holding pattern for a bit I guess.

Just too short...

Another option on the live well would be to get a shop to weld you up a flip up seat/backrest like in the one that Hamerhead does.  If you go this way you could have rodholders welded on too.  You can never have too many rod holders.

Question

How do I secure my console to nida core?

I don’t have access to it underneath and from the test holes I’ve drilled they didn’t expoy in any backing plates.

I was thinking toggle bolts possibly?

Probably better to overdrill and fill with thickened epoxy.  Then screw into the epoxy plug.  Any penetration of nidacore creates possibility of crushing the core.

Looks like it would work.  Probably a bit more expensive than adding fillers to regular epoxy, but very convenient.

I would add West (or similar) milled fibres to any epoxy (pre- thickened or not), you were going to put a screw in. And make the holes oversize. When I put my tee top on & new leaning posts I drilled a oversize hole of 1'' (leaving the bottom/inside skin intact) and filled it with epoxy & milled fibres. Let it kick off, faired and glassed over it. Then tapped threads into it and screwed into that. Provided the surrounding foam/ply and glass are structurally sound it should be rock solid. I've had the pre thickened stuff fail, it was surprisingly brittle.

Little bit done today.  Inching closer.  I have a week off so no excuses.

We lifted the console in today and did a test fit with the cooler.

There is a ton of room to walk around.  Im glad I went with the smaller console.

So as we talked about before was how to mount the console on the nida core.  I decided to drill out holes almost all the way through the deck and then use an allen wrench to remove about an 1.25 worth of material below the surface and then back fill with epoxy.  Hopefully that makes sense.

so you can see here the top opening is only 3/4" but below the top layer of the deck the cored out area is easily double that size.

So I think Ill wait a full 2 days for that to cure before I screw it down.  Do you guys/girls think 12 screws is enough?

Back in the bildge I made a rookie mistake.  I installed(read put down with 5200 :a0004:) 2 fairly large pumps that have a 1 1/8" outlet.  Problem is the bilge is plumbed with 3/4" tube.  So it took a while but I was able to find some 1 1/8" to 3/4" reducers.  So I paid extra for some big pumps that wont be able to move as much water as they should.  Oh well but I bet they shoot that water like 5 foot from the boat!

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/B1274B5B-8424-490B-A851-323BB1A64267_zpsonivvaov.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/B1274B5B-8424-490B-A851-323BB1A64267_zpsonivvaov.jpeg.html)

I also managed to get the bulkhead holes drilled for the hydraulic steering.  I still need to run the cables through the rigging tubes but I still have a little work to do on the aft equipment boxes.  I ordered some rubber grommets to help with ares where the lines might chaff.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/C437A683-ED4F-4221-A489-ECA3ADD7242F_zpsaiuvshhu.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/C437A683-ED4F-4221-A489-ECA3ADD7242F_zpsaiuvshhu.jpeg.html)

Ive started getting some quotes for a suzuki 175.  Hopefully the boat will be ready soon.

Looking good!
Over drilling and filling is the best you can hope for when using a honeycomb type composite. I would give it several days to cure. What I found is if you don't drill the correct size pilot hole in the cured epoxy, when you install the screws, the plug will actually break loose and start turning between the top and bottom glass. I took this same approach in my tank lid where I mounted the battery trays.

Ive been a little lazy keeping up on the site.  The boat however is ready for a motor!

I ordered the livewell leanpost combo.  Initially I was going to go with an oval livewell and use it as the seat as well.  But after trying the different options I decided this better suited the entire family and still managed maximum fishing ability and room on the boat.  This livewell is only 30x30 so again with the small console there is soooo much room on this boat.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/346799AE-827B-49E2-8569-B8AF929AAA14_zpsq0srksww.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/346799AE-827B-49E2-8569-B8AF929AAA14_zpsq0srksww.jpeg.html)

The livewell has a false bottom.  Makes for easy plumbing.  I also added a small LED as well.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/48B2F4AE-EFDE-4D2B-AEB1-F4FEE6ABEED3_zpssbz0t2wz.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/48B2F4AE-EFDE-4D2B-AEB1-F4FEE6ABEED3_zpssbz0t2wz.jpeg.html)

it has a 1 1/2" drain pipe. and a 1 1/8" fill on a 1200 gph pump.  The fill valve is adjustable as well.  So if we want shrimp or crabs or the drain pipe just cant keep up we can dial it back.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/214CDA65-F5C5-4761-9D4E-DEA22D271636_zpsym1mfs9l.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/214CDA65-F5C5-4761-9D4E-DEA22D271636_zpsym1mfs9l.jpeg.html)

Mounting the livewell was a bit of a challenge.  The front of the livewell was over the coffin box.(side not my fuel tank is enormous, guessing 80 gallons)  So the front screws for the livewell were done just like the console.  Drill out, and back fill with epoxy.  The side and aft screws I was able to bolt through.  I used PVC board as a backing plate to spread the load.  I cant imagine this thing is going anywhere but with the weight of the water in the well I just wanted to make sure.

I added these rod holders on each side of the console.

Yes the livewell and console are different colors, and it drives me crazy a little :-)

To my amazement everything turned on!

I got the plate hydraulic lines hooked up.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/24FB364B-1BE7-4672-99F4-72279BB5D31B_zpstlfk6yvn.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/24FB364B-1BE7-4672-99F4-72279BB5D31B_zpstlfk6yvn.jpeg.html)

and was able to get the steering and plate lines into a nice rigging tube.  The other side will have a rigging tube similar to this as well.  The only thing that will be visible once the motor is mounted will be the fuel water separator.  Even that wont be bad though.  It should tuck up under the lip and only be about 50% visible.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o615/RiddleEagle18/0B96C2AF-8434-4CEC-ABC2-1657D81D5091_zpskgeeq5hz.jpeg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/RiddleEagle18/media/0B96C2AF-8434-4CEC-ABC2-1657D81D5091_zpskgeeq5hz.jpeg.html)

that big hole is for speakers....

So thats where she sits.  Ordering the Motor tomorrow.  Decided to go with a suzuki 175.  Im leaning towards white, but I will make that decision tomorrow I guess.  Im hoping to have it on the water before all the tarpon leave the bay.

Looks great!  I love your leaning post/ livewell.  Do you have a longer shot of your console wiring?  It looks clean and well thought out.

All the pictures I have of the wiring are in the thread. I’ll see if I can grab some more next time I’m at the boat.

Rigging question for you guys. I’m trying to rig the fuel line with these TH rigging flanges and Y.
https://thmarinesupplies.com/products/rigging-flange-with-fuel-hose-port-and-rigging-hose-union

The problem is the flange fits type A fuel line(great that’s what I’m using) but the Y fits type B. It’s so weird to me that they sell it this way. Is it typical to change to type B after the primer bulb and separator?

That’s fine if it is I’ll just use type B, but I thought type B was the one that has issues with ethanol?
