New Transom Time for the 222 CCP
« on: January 10, 2013, 04:49:47 PM »
Dropping the ole girl off Saturday in Washington, NC to have a new transom installed   This will give me a chance to address several items including removal of the well known splashwell  Since the stern will be exposed, plan to replace the cockpit drains, waterline scuppers, and hoses for the self bailing system as well as the seacock assembly.

I have decided not to close in the transom and install a bracket.  I don't see the need for all the extra expense for a 1986 boat.  As seen in the picture below, the red line is the proposed cut line for the splashwell.  Once that is cut out, the white line represents some type of splash gate that will fold up and down.  Needed some opinions on this :?:   This would greatly increase the room behind the leaning post.  The one positive about the original splashwell was the cockpit security.  I never worry about a following sea entering the cockpit.  I don't want to loose this security with the new proposed area.

The picture below was taken by flounderpounder before I purchased the boat.  Seems to give the best angle of the splashwell area.  Need some input

JD -

Just a preliminary observation, but I worry that the location of the white line which you want to be your new splash gate is a bit close to your engine.  Be careful it doesn't conflict with your cowling when the engine is trimmed up.  I'll add a photo from my wellcraft 18 fisherman later tonight if there's enough daylight left when I get home.  You may not be able to make the new splash gate as tall as you'd like unless you contour it specifically to clear the engine.

2-cents.

Thanks for your input Georgie.  The gate would fold down onto the deck if needed and would lock in place when up.  Good point

Hey JD,
Are you using Scotti's builder? I noticed the anticipated completion date on the photo! I like what you're doing with that 1 1/2 yard splash well. Get those drains to where we can dump a 100 poggies back there without snotting up the drains. I'll tell you what, I like my old sexy 73 22-2  but those CCP's sure getter done in a 4' sea! I'm ready to get some more Mackerel blood in that boat come October!

Ditto what Georgie said - make sure you can trim/tilt the motor without hitting anything.

That was so cruel

JD I like the idea of the fold down and and locking gate much better than the idea I had....a drop-in gate. Would be safer too, wouldn't have to lift it out to trim the motor.

A lot of the issue with water shipping would be cured by a high transom, with a cutout for the motor. May look a little funky though.

Maybe this will give you some ideas. This is the setup on Slipaway. The "top" of the gate has nonskid. It also folds down into a recess built into the sole. This makes it nice when its down as you have a smooth transition all the way to the motor. Also, my transom is setup for a single 25 inch. The sides of the cutout as you can see in the last pic really keep a lot of water intrusion out.

I had the exact same splash well in my 79 22 FF.
I hated it, took up a lot of fishing room in the back.
I removed it about 18 years ago, I did pretty much the same thing you are thinking about.

The original splash well drains still drain the shortened splash well.
When I first had this done I had a splash gate on the cock pit side of transom, all it did was rattle, took it out a year or 2 later and have never missed .

JD that may be the solution right there. Little half guard.

They used to make a Hydrasport like that. They imbedded rodholders in the top horizontal surface all the way across. It would hold six rods, all standing up and handy.

Good stuff Bill :salut:

Thanks to all for the suggestions.  I will know more once I drop the boat off tomorrow as far as my options go.

Bondobill - yours looks like the better option.  Looks like you had the transom raised on both sides of the engine :?:  Not sure I want to do that so I can keep my options open for twins.  I do like your design.  Might look at doing something like that.

I raised the outside of the rear transom just 2 years ago when I did a poured transom. Did it to raise the kicker 5". Before that my back transom was flat all the way across, just like yours.

Yea I remember that pogie slime, a giant wad of snot.  Im really digging the half splash well (great idea) and keeping the transom at original height.  I think that will work out well for you.  You could also do a hybrid, combine Bondos half well and lew dogs folding option.

edit..    ....I just noticed,  whats up with that shipoke logo on the top of the page.

I like the look of bondo bills, looks like it would serve your purpose well..Still protects with a following sea but leaves more floor room :thumright: and leaves the option for twins later if you wanted to go that way :thumright:

Got the boat dropped off Saturday.  Got the price I was looking for so struck a deal with Pamlico Boat and Fiberglass for the work to begin.

Transom will be replaced and the splashwell will be completely removed.  The plan is to extend the deck all the way back to the transom.  Going to do it very similar to Bondobill's.  I will not be raising the transom height, so I have decided to go with a removable wave gate.  A channel will be glassed in on both sides and the wave gate will simply "drop in" or "pull out".  This gives me the option to keep it in or out based on sea conditions.  Decided not to go with the half guard like Bondobill's only because I will not be raising the transom height and I want the extra protection.  The fabricator basically told me that I should be loosing around 500 pounds of weight from the stern once completed.

Demolition should start sometime within the next week.  He said about 4 to 6 weeks to complete.  I will post some pictures when he really gets into it.
