170 helm layout
« on: May 31, 2009, 06:08:35 PM »
Is it just me or is it odd that the helm is in the center of the console...making it a one person boat.  Looking at my new 170 pontential rebuild, I'm thinking of sliding the helm over to port with the engine control in the center.  That way I can be next to my honey AND behind the console while she drives.  It would mean filling all holes and finishing but I'm up for that.  While I'm at it I'd be tempted to open up the recess across the top to accomidate 2 properly insulated beers on the starboard side.  Any one else considered this?  thanks.

Found it odd also at the beginning but now I'm used to it and prefer it like that. It's probably because they had the single helm seat option way back then and maybe  for better weight distribution who knows, my wife sits in the front and me at the helm smoking my cigarette in peace  :D

I found it odd too.  So when I rebuilt my console I moved the helm to the Port side as much as possible.  I prefer to the helm in my left and controls in my right, thus the port position.  And, that leaves room for my sweetie on the seat next to me (without elbowing her all the time).
