Repowered 245 Explorer with 250 Etec
« on: July 26, 2016, 10:54:37 AM »
I repowered my 245 Explorer with a 250 Etec this weekend! Can't wait to get her on the water.

I picked up a pair of 250 etecs late last year that had low hours and had been in storage in a barn for ten years! The counter rotating motor did well in its slumber.  The standard rotation motor not so good. Surface rust on the cylinder walls required a tear down and rebuild. I was a learning curve but I did the job myself.

Haven't splashed her yet.  Weight will not be an issue. The Etec is not much heavier than the Ocean pro and the stern of my Explorer floats very high.

Splashed the boat with the new Etec today. Man is that thing quiet! I put three hours on her and only burned 10 gallons.

Update on the Etec repower. I've been very happy with the Etec. It's like having a new boat. She behaves and handles differnt so I have to learn her trim preferences, cruise rpms etc etc. I have been working on getting her dialed in. I'm on my third prop and I think it is the right prop. I thought the motor height was a tad low even though I mounted the motor in that same holes the Ocean Pro was mounted in. I decided to shot a video of the motor while running to see where the cav plate was actually riding. I decided to move it up one hole.
Below are some videos for viewer enjoyment!

Video of engine after first week:

You will love your Etec.  I know I do.  They are smooth powerful and reliable for me so far.  I admit I only have a 90 on a 170.  But I think the 90 is your engine sliced in half.  Have fun getting everything tweaked and set up just right!

I just looked up the specs.  Your engine should be the 3.3L  So my engine is a lot less than half of yours.  Either way get out on the water and enjoy your boat!!

Yup it's the big block 3.3l. I have the 90 Ocean Pro on my 170 and it's a rocket. I'll bet the 90 Etec really moves!

Yeah it didn't seem to take any time at all to be at 5000rpm with that big ole heavy boat. :13:

Yes the Etec has some impressive low end and mid range power.

Any updates on fuel burn/ rpm @ cruise and wot speed/rpm??   I have the same hull and power and wanted to compare.  I feel like mine uses more fuel than it should.      Thanks, will

What prop are you running? Also what it your WOT rpms? With the Etec you need to be in the optimum WOT rpms of 5500-5600.

At 30 mph cruise I'm burning about 10-11 gph.
