Re-power 222 flat back
« on: August 30, 2017, 06:41:08 PM »
I had a very bad time this last weekend. I my 1971 222 got rear ended. I had a brand new 2016 175hp Susuki and for me it was quite fast. When I rebuilt it I had no wood at all in it so it was light. I am thinking of putting a 140hp in its place. Plus the boat at high speed the boat propises and i can not keep it wide open.

So with that said, do you think I should go with a 140hp or maybe something else?

Thanks, John

Rear ended, wow!?!  Sorry to hear this.  Can't say I've heard of a 22-2 porpoising with a 175hp, even from owners who have restored with composite.  When you rebuilt did you move the fuel tank and/or console further aft?  I personally know a composite restored 22-2 owner with a yamaha 250hp set back with a porta bracket, as well as the baitwell in the enclosed transom.  No issues.  And that engine is nearly the same weight as the suzuki 175hp.  The suzuki 140 you mentioned is about 100lbs less weight than the 175hp, so in theory the 140 will remedy the porpoising.  But in my opinion you'll be underpowered.

Wow - sorry to hear that - boat ok? Just motor damage?
Seems the 150 range is the best speed/performance - they were designed for 90hp or twin 70s.

I agree a 150 HP would be the best match.  Aaron had the 3.0L Mercury 150 four stroke on his with good results.

I have a Yamaha 150 4 stroke with rigging for sale in Safety Harbor, FL if you are close. Warranty until 2019. I will rig it for you if you bring the boat to me.

I think a new 'Zuki DF140 would be nice on that boat!  Also consider the 4-cylinder 175 or 200 -  the 6 cylinder 4-stroke models might be a bit heavy for that boat.

Boat ran 41 mph WOT and cruised nice at 28 mph getting 5mph with the 150hp mercury 4stroke
