170 fuel tank

I know this has been talked about but I still can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I restored my child hood boat. 74 170 about 5 years ago but I now need to replace the tank. Has anyone put a poly tank in a 170 and if so what size?  Thanks for any input

 I was unable to find a poly tank for my 170 with the capacity I wanted.  I think the closest one was a 24 gallon maybe  and I don't even remember if that one was going to fit think it was a little bit too tall.  I ended up getting mine from Phil at alloy metal works. Super nice guy and great to deal with. Had my tank built and shipped to me within a couple weeks.  If installed correctly an aluminum tank will last a very long time which you will find by looking at many aluminum tank installs on this forum

PO replaced tank in my 175 which is very similar.  It was a Moeller 25 gallon.  I can dig up the dimensions if you need it.

 I would appreciate it. Just wondering how you hooked up your fill line being moeller  tanks have straight fittings. Not 90 degree like original tanks. Thank you and please let me know

Find a good welder. I had my fill turned and rewelded. Short money.

It stinks, the fill hose is just bent, no fitting, same with the vent line.  I've been trying to find a plastic L Piece but they don't exist.  I actually bypass the fill line, and fill direct through the hatch in the floor, and use a plug to keep the fill sealed when in use. 

The PO installed it. It's too short for the coffin size, so he built a wooden frame to take up the space in the back of the coffin.  If you got a lower tank, it wouldn't be an issue, you need a really long, low tank.

I found a guy here in Houston who welded me up an identical aluminum tank to the original.  Everything exactly the same.  I don't recall the price but it was worth it.

hi, know this is an older post but i had a new stainless steel tank fabricated to fit my 170 exactly where the old one did. there isn't much room in the coffin for jerking around with fittings and rerouting fill and vent lines so this was my best solution. i got 6 prices and 'Speedy Tank' was the best price. they were very professional and did a great job, worth the $400 or so i spent (previously spent $150 trying to repair old one, duh!). they also gave me very clear install instructions to avoid the crevice corrosion that the original aluminum foamed in place tanks suffered from. I can send the shop drawing for you to review if you like.
