97 explorer 215/Johnson 200 top speed
« on: January 25, 2020, 12:27:50 AM »
All, I’m suffering from the New England winter blues. I bought a 97 explorer 215 this fall and have yet to use it on the water. It has a johnson ocean runner 200 on it. I am curious as to what this boat and engine combo will do for a top speed, what it will do as a cruising speed etc. anyone who has this setup, I’d appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

I have a '92 230 with Yam250. I can get almost 40 mph for top speed and cruise is upper 20's to lower 30's mph.

Thanks, Rick. I am guessing ill get around 40 WOT, however with my old Johnson I don't intend to open it up too often $$

Ah the ol' 210 Coastal.  They came with a 150 from the factory and we've seen them with 250s also. I recall a You Tube vid with a guy running the 250 and he was breaking 50 mph. If you're set up right, I'd guess that 43-45 is doable with the motor in tune.

Good luck. :thumright:

Aquanoob,

I have the same boat with a 175 Etec.  With a light boat, 1/4 tank of fuel, no gear, and just me on board I had her pushing 50 mph.  I can say she didn't like it much.  It was fine on a flat surface going straight, but she tends to chine walk in a turn.  Its a bit unnerving.  I usually run at 3500 - 4000 rpms and around 30 - 35 mph.  She handles well at that speed.
