OK, got the insert replaced today.  Didn't quite challenge Seabob's record of 30 seconds, but it didn't take a full day either, so I'm happy.  I was a little nervous as I was coming down the home stretch, as the length of new insert didn't appear to be as long as I though it would.  I ended up with only about 15" excess   .  Either I was way off when I measured 52 feet of existing rub rail, or the 70 foot length was a little light.

I gotta say that I'm happy with the white insert (the old insert was grey, which is no longer available).  If I did this right, here is the boat with the old insert:

And here it is with the new insert:

Hopefully these pics will help anyone trying to get an idea how the white insert looks if they also need to replace theirs.

Thanks Bob for all the help!

Well done Craig!  Bet you were sweating going down the dogleg, looking at the rest of the boat, looking at the remaining insert...

What was your heating method du jour?

Thanks Capt. Bob & Seabob!  Yeah. I was sweating quite a bit, both from the humidity as well as the length.  I just measured the old insert - it is right under 50', so it looks like the 70' white one was really a 50'.  I'm glad it made it...I really didn't want to do this again!

I used a heat gun to soften the insert.  I read on the Taco website (or somewhere) to heat 2 ft at a time, but I wasn't quick enough to get the whole 2 ft inserted before it cooled off.  So I went with about a foot at a time.  Took a little longer, but it worked just fine.

Looks good!  Do you have a 225 or a 245?  I have to do my 245 soon.

Thanks!  It's actually a 205.

I think the best lesson learned from my install is to lay out the new insert along side the old one after you remove it and make sure the new one is long enough before you start installing it.  The packing slip for my new one said it was 70', but it was really a 50'.  Luckily I over-estimated mine when I came up with 52', and it was actually just under 50'.  As they say, better to be lucky than good!

Before I toss my old gray insert, does anyone want it?  It is still in pretty good shape, but does seem a little softer than the new one.  It is off of a 205 Osprey, but I would say it is a little too short for that boat (I think that is the reason it was popping out of the pulpit corners).

Would be just fine for a 200 Osprey...

Bob, Do you still have a connection for white rubrail inserts.  My 99' 215 DC rubrail is always popping out around the pulipit.  After looking at these pictures I think the white will look nice.  Thanks.
