Yamaha gauge covers????
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:02:45 AM »
So on my 2001 Aquasport 215, which has a yamaha 200 outboard, 3 of the guages need replaced

TACH
SPEEDO
WATER PRESSURE

This is due to being in direct sunlight for years, no covers... LCD is basically shot on the 2 main ones

So as i go to replace these expensive gauges, i am having a hard time find anything aftermarket for gauge covers

Anyone find and use those covers???

Can't say I've looked or that they exist. The sunlight burnout definitely does, as you well know.

I'm currently trying to extend the life of my 1991 vintage gauges by keeping them covered while not in actual use (think underway) with a heavy, white towel. That works in my case because of the WAC's helm configuration.

Good luck.

Anything you can put over them to cover when the boat's not in use will work...

I lay a towel over the new ones I bought.  The boat is covered much of it's life, so it's a little redundancy.

i was hoping for gauge covers, not sure why they arent sold

this boat stays on davits 100% of the time and no cover available unless i get a custom one done

i need something that will stay secure due to wind & rain obviously, i am no where new this location which makes it more important

Just a thought, they make what are called test plugs for PVC pipe, just light duty plastic caps that slip into a PVC pipe, all different sizes... inverted and given the correct size, they might work as gauge covers.  I may look into it, covering them is a good idea... :salut:

I have used an edged piece of vinyl/naugahyde to cover all the gauges held in place with 4 snaps.  Not fancy or OEM but it worked fine.  I would reccommend only using white.  I had a red (leftover old aircraft intake cover) one beed   and the stain was hard to get out..  What can I say it was free, and once again it was proven that you get what you pay for....

Just a caveat to all owners out their that have Yam digital gauges...

I have replaced MANY gauges, tachs, speedos, fuel management, that, if you shrouded the gauge with your hands and got REAL close, you could tell they still functioned fine...but were basically useless in the real world.  And replacement costs aren't fun...

So use whatever, but cover your Yam digital gauges!!!

Not really Rick.  It's the lens over the LCD.  I've gone so far as to TRY to diassemble a tach that I can see is working (can see the digits when shrouded big time), but unfortunately, the whole assembly appears to be ultrasonically welded...in other words, no R & R the lens...

I read a lot on this and somehow the sun boils the Liquid in the LCD  - gets dimmer and dimmer.
Don't know the other side of the story though - do LCD displays suffer even after being covered for years.

Thought I would contribute to this forum as I have recieved great information as a lurker.

Was reading this post and thought there has to be some rubbermaid caps to bowls that would fit my Yamaha gauges.  Having just purchased new gauges last summer,  I wanted to find a way to get the most out of this set as the sun did my last set in, LCD's went.

While at Publix today I was in the kitchen utensils section and looking for something to fit about 3.75 inches over my Yamaha gauges.  Came across this.

then tried them on my gauges.  Guess what, they fit snug.

Here is the info:
1 cup saucer and lid made by Anchor, bought from Publix in the kitchen utensils aisle.  I am testing them currently to see if they stay on with the wind, as we are having 45 mph+ winds with the tropical storm coming in just north of us in Flagler.  Might have to modify a bit as they slowly retreat, but just enough to stay on.
Cost: $2.69.

Not a bad price to save my gauges.  Bought the last one, waitiing to see if any more come in for the tach gauge.  If you can not find them, PM me and I will see if I can send some out at cost if they get any more in stock.

Edit:  Just checked these and the fit does not seem as snug as I originally thought. The wind had blown it off.  I have made a small cut on the lid to see if it will stay.  Might not be for trailering...

Awesome!!! :salut:  :salut:  :salut:

Too bad you have only 1 Publix handy....if Flagler Beach is the way I remember it, not much there.  There are 7 Publix's nearby, if you want I'll pick you up 1 tomorrow...
