19-6 badge duplication

Just for the heck of it, I figured I'd start a thread showing the reconstruction of a tired 19-6 badge (loaned by Bob of 22-2 diver fame) and it's duplication in case someone else wants to do their own sometime.

This is the starting raw material:



It's mostly all there but with some pieces missing or broken...




Dock rash on the "6"...



In this last picture, the top of the "T" is obviously missing but so is the final "swoop" of the end of the T script.  I missed that at first but when I was cleaning the badge up I noticed it.  Will refer to my other badges to see how much is missing.

Next installment will be filling the missing areas.  Repair material of choice is Bondo.  Has good grain structure, adheres well, sands well and cures enough to shape & sand in about an hour.

First filling simply builds up bulk in the largest injured spots.  As with most filling/fairing tasks, second and possibly third fills will be needed.

Haven't had a chance to do much on the badge master the last couple of days, but I'd better get my a** in gear because I've gotten hit with a bunch of orders...

Progress slow but got most of the fairing done last night with a detail sander.

  One detail I need to address is the shape of the tail at the end of the "t" on the badge.  If someone could take a picture of their 19-6 badge & post it for me it would help a lot.  I want to get this right first shot...

What a great idea, I was reluctant to take them off for fear of making them worse but I think I will try this method and see if I can make mine look new again.  Keep theprogress pics coming!!

Have been diverted from the badge project by other things out of my control which has eaten my time.... you know the drill...  Hope to get the master done this weekend but it has to be as perfect as I can get it because all it's children will look just like it.

Progress today culminating in pouring of the mold:













Tomorrow evening will pull the master from the mold and turn out a 1st piece badge for "Q.C. review".

First badge:



Not as good as I'd hoped but unless you eyeball it at less than 6", it should serve.  Now I have to look back and see who wanted badges again, see if they still want them, & get 'em shipped.  Next I want to do a 170 badge.  If anyone hears of a candidate to use as a master, please get in touch.

I have a mold setup for that already Jim.  It's not perfect but it works for me.  If you want me to send one to you I will.
