Re powering 2000 215 osprey DC
« on: April 13, 2017, 08:13:14 AM »
Well the original 2000 175 ficht finally lost an injector and toasted one cylinder. I've spent a little while contemplating what to do. I've finally decided to bite the bullet and repower with a new motor. The prices of motors is insane. I am going to bump up from the 175 to a 200.

Boat is mostly used for fishing but it needs to do the family thing a few times a month. I live in Nj and it does get used out to 15 mikes from shore. The 175 did ok for me and two buddies but did struggle when the whole family is on the boat. I figure going with a new 200 should be sufficient power wise and that is what the budget allows to buy new.

The questions are-
1) go with a two stroke or a 4 stroke

2) does anyone have a similar boat and re powered lately.

3) anyone running a new Suzuki. It would be kind of sac reigous for me to buy but there pricing is very tempting. I can save almost 5k by going with them over other prices I have been quoted from mercury and evinrude.

I do not know about the weight consideration for that hull, but price-wise, Tohatsu has been pretty aggressive with their pricing.  The new, larger-power Tohatsus are re-badged Hondas.  I don't own one, but the Honda reputation is very strong, and my understanding is that the only difference is the color of the paint.  The dealer in the Houston area advertises the 200 for 15,472, including all of the controls, etc.  Out-the-door for 17,730 including TTL and installation.  For Honda-quality in a brand new package, I think that's pretty competitive.

A 4 cylinder 200 suzuki would be a little heavier but a nice match on that hull they were bumping 50 with one on a 21 Bluewater and I'd say weight wide you're pretty close to the same they're cheaper than the v6 and MUCH lighter.
The Hondas are GUTLESS TURDS they're pretty reliable but that's about all they have going for them maintenance is expensive parts are expensive and if you go the  tohatsu route it will be even more expensive.
Stick with evinrude Suzuki or mercury and don't buy a yamaha unless you have good insurance cause it'll be just a matter of time before they steal your boat and strip it with the grey motors.

I'm familiar with that hull.  The 175 is OK power for it but works hard with a heavy load.  Going with a 200 is the way to go.

The Hondas while good motors (not in the beginning) Are very heavy and are..... well have HP ratings that are optimistic at best... (they are dogs).  And yes the Tohotsus are Hondas in a different dress.

Look into a 200 Etec G1.  It will hook right up to your current rigging and wiring.  And is very lightweight with GOBS of torque compared to any of the fourstrokes..  and no break in or maintenance for 3 years or 300 hours.  If you get a G2 They have FIVE years not maintenance!

The Suzuki has a 10 hour break in period, engine and lower unit oil change at 20 hours and then every 100 hours. Also there is a balancing chain that has to be replaced down the road.

I have priced out 5 new motors.

1) Suzuki 200hp- 16,200 installed

2) evinrude etec G1 small block 200- 16,700 installed

3) evinrude etec G1 big block- 200HO- 18,400 installed

4) mercury optimax 200- 18,400 installed

5) mercury verado v6- 21,700 installed

I've always had 2 strokes but a 4 stroke is very appealing. No more two stroke oil and much quieter. Plus with a two stroke of your external oil pump takes a crap you toast the motor.

I'm going to make my decision on the motor by Monday. Spring detailing of the boat should be done tomorrow then I just have to put a fresh coat of bottom paint on. People are out starting to slam stripers and the blues are only a week or two away and the boat is still in the driveway.

Here are a few pictures of the boat for reference. Pictures were taken before I started the spring detailing.

Those are the prices I'm getting in NJ. I talked to one mercury dealer, two evinrude dealers and two Suzuki dealers.

Where are you getting those low prices?

Go take a Etec for a ride... it's as quiet or quieter than four strokes and has lower emissions. If the oil pump fails the engine will protect itself but still get you home. Oh and four strokes have pumps too!

Here in Florida
You should reach out further to dealers out of state though when I bought my eyes a few years ago I called every dealer from key west to Alabama and North Carolina and finally settled on a dealer in Augusta.
I agree with the etec sentiment go try one before you buy any other engine you'll be QUITE happy with what two strokes have become

Well I finally decided on a 200hp small block etec. Went to the largest evinrude dealer in the state this morning.

I got a 200hp G1 etec small block, with all rigging, new electrical harness, new throttle and cables, new oil reservoir with new oil pump, the digital etec gauge and they are going to replace all of my oem aquasport gauges in the dash cluster for $15,000. It is $16,300 out the door because of the tax man.

I feel pretty good about the deal I got after the pricing I was getting from all of the other dealers and manufacturers.

I will be taking the boat over at some point next week to get the install done.

Thats a great deal.  What warranty are they giving you?  I think the 10 year promotion just expired.

Sounds like a good deal but did you try Barnacle Bill's?

I got evinrude prices from J&B, Franzwa's and Jarvis. Jarvis gave me the best price and included the most extras.

+1 for barnacle bills and I wouldn't buy unless you get them to include the 10 year warranty.
